AIR FRYER HONEYNUT SQUASH

Air Fryer Honeynut Squash image

Honeynut squashes are the tiny brown squashes that look kind of like miniature butternut squashes. The flesh is a bit darker and very sweet. This simple preparation is easy, delicious, and makes a fun presentation for dinner guests on Thanksgiving or for any fall or winter meal. I made mine in my Ninja® Foodi™ digital air fryer, and my instructions are rather specific for that configuration. Adapt accordingly for your oven or air fryer, which also may need to be preheated (the Ninja® Foodi™ heats so fast that no preheating is needed).

Tip 1: Choose the Perfect Honeynut Squash

Choosing the right honeynut squash is the first critical step in making tasty and nutritious honeynut squash recipes. Look for small-sized honeynut squash that is firm, heavy, and has a smooth surface. Make sure to check for any damaged, rotten, or soft spots on the squash. Typically mature honeynut squash will have tan-colored skin with a few green marks, and the flesh is orange. These squash will likely have fewer seeds, and the flesh will be richer in taste and texture.

Tip 2: Wash and Dry the Honeynut Squash

It is critical to wash and dry honeynut squash before cooking to remove any dirt, grime, or bacteria. You can clean them with water or use a vegetable brush if necessary to ensure they are clean. Once you wash the squash, dry them thoroughly before peeling, cutting or cooking. Wet honeynut squash can cause steam inside the air fryer, which will impact the cooking process and make the vegetable mushy.

Tip 3: Cut the Squash Evenly and Thinly

It is crucial to cut honeynut squash evenly and thinly to ensure that it cooks evenly and doesn't get burnt or undercooked. You can cut the squash into cubes, wedges or slices, depending on the recipe you are making. Be sure to cut them two inches or less in thickness. Thicker slices may not get cooked evenly, and the heat may not penetrate the center of the squash.

Tip 4: Season the Squash Appropriately

Seasoning is a crucial step to make a perfect honeynut squash dish. You can use different seasoning combinations like salt, ground pepper, chili flakes, garlic powder, smoked paprika, ground cumin, or nutmeg, depending on your taste. Olive oil is not needed as the air fryer will help to cook the squash evenly and make them crispy. You can spoon the seasoning over the squash or toss the squash in a bowl along with the seasoning. Be sure to mix the squash well to ensure the seasoning covers the entire surface.

Tip 5: Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheating the air fryer is a crucial step to ensure that the honeynut squash cooks evenly and crispy. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F for five minutes before putting the squash in. Preheating will help to create a sear on the outside of the squash and avoid sticking to the basket. It also helps to reduce the cooking time of the squash.

Tip 6: Use the Right Air Fryer Basket

The right air fryer basket is essential to make honeynut squash recipes. Choose a non-stick air fryer basket that has a parchment paper insert or rack that allows the air to circulate around the squash. It's important to shake the basket occasionally during cooking to allow all sides of the squash to cook evenly. The non-stick basket will prevent the squash from sticking and breaking apart.

Tip 7: Take Care When Checking the Squash

While using an air fryer, it's important to take great care when checking the honeynut squash. Opening the air fryer lid frequently can cause temperature fluctuations, leading to uneven cooking. Resist the urge to check the cooking process, as it may take longer to achieve the desired level of crispiness or tenderness. Instead, wait for the recommended cooking time before checking the squash.

Tip 8: Serve the Squash Right Away

Honeynut squash is best served hot immediately after cooking in the air fryer. You can sprinkle some chopped herbs or garnish on top of the squash before serving, like parsley, cilantro, or a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Delaying serving the squash can cause them to lose their crispiness and become soggy.
