Tips for Making Perfect Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes

Hasselback potatoes are a great way to enjoy a crispy and flavorful potato dish, but making them can be tricky. However, with an air fryer, you can make perfect hasselback potatoes that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Here are some valuable tips to help you achieve the perfect air fryer hasselback potatoes.
1. Choose the right type of potatoes
The type of potatoes you choose can make a huge difference in the texture and flavor of your hasselback potatoes. Choose potatoes that are starchy and have a dense flesh, such as Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes. These types of potatoes will hold their shape better and result in a crispier texture.
2. Slice the potatoes evenly
To make hasselback potatoes, the potatoes need to be sliced thinly and evenly without cutting through the bottom. A mandoline slicer can be helpful, but if you don't have one, use a sharp knife and make sure to keep the potato stable while slicing. Unevenly sliced potatoes can result in uneven cooking, and some slices may be overcooked and burnt while others may not be fully cooked.
3. Soak the potatoes in cold water
Soaking the sliced potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes before cooking can remove excess starch and help prevent them from sticking together. It also helps the potatoes to crisp up better in the air fryer.
4. Dry the potatoes thoroughly
After soaking the potatoes, make sure to dry them thoroughly with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Any excess moisture on the potatoes can cause them to steam instead of crisping up in the air fryer.
5. Preheat the air fryer
Preheating the air fryer before cooking your hasselback potatoes is important to achieve the perfect crispy texture. Set the air fryer to 400°F and let it preheat for at least 5 minutes before cooking.
6. Season the potatoes well
Don't be afraid to season your hasselback potatoes generously. You can use a variety of herbs and spices such as garlic, rosemary, thyme, paprika, and cumin to add flavor to your potatoes.
7. Brush the potatoes with oil
Brushing the potatoes with oil helps to crisp up the potatoes in the air fryer. You can use any kind of oil such as olive oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil. Make sure to brush each slice of potato with oil so that they cook evenly.
8. Cook the potatoes in batches
Overcrowding the air fryer can cause the potatoes to cook unevenly and not crisp up properly. To ensure that your potatoes are cooked perfectly, cook them in batches.
9. Flip the potatoes halfway through cooking
To ensure that both sides of the potatoes are evenly cooked and crispy, flip them halfway through cooking. Use tongs or a spatula to carefully turn each potato slice over.
10. Adjust cooking time and temperature if necessary
Air fryers can vary in temperature and cooking time, so make sure to keep an eye on your potatoes and adjust the cooking time and temperature if necessary. If your potatoes are browning too quickly or not crisping up enough, adjust the temperature or cooking time accordingly.

Conclusion

Air fryer hasselback potatoes can be a delicious and easy side dish. With these valuable tips, you can achieve the perfect crispy texture and flavorful potatoes. Remember to slice the potatoes evenly, soak them in cold water, dry them thoroughly, preheat the air fryer, season and oil them well, cook them in batches, flip them halfway through cooking, and adjust the cooking time and temperature if necessary. Follow these tips, and you'll have a delicious potato dish in no time!
