Seasoned Crunchy Cod Fillets in the Air Fryer image

The air fryer does a great job on fish, and the topping on these cod fillets is tasty and crunchy. Use the fillets as a main dish with some rice and veggies, or as a sandwich filling, with lettuce, tomato, and remoulade, or your favorite sandwich spread. Make sure the rest of your dinner is nearly done, because these filets will be ready in less than 25 minutes.

Time 22m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 9

avocado oil cooking spray
⅓ cup unseasoned panko bread crumbs
⅓ cup stone-ground yellow cornmeal
2 teaspoons seasoning mix (such as Trader Joe's® 21 Seasoning Salute Blend)
1 teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
½ cup buttermilk
3 (5 ounce) cod fillets
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Create a foil sling in the bottom of a basket-style air fryer, going across the bottom of the basket and up the sides, about 3 inches. Poke a few holes in the bottom of the foil sling, to match the holes in the basket. Spray the sling with avocado oil. If using a shelf-style air fryer, omit this step.
  • Combine panko crumbs, yellow cornmeal, seasoning blend, paprika, and salt in a small bowl. Pour buttermilk into a second bowl.
  • Pat cod fillets dry with paper towels and lightly dust both sides with flour. Dip each flour-coated fillet into the buttermilk, then turn in the crumb mixture. Pat the crumb mixture on all sides of each fillet and place on the foil sling, if using. Place on the rack of a shelf-style air fryer. Spray each cod fillet with avocado oil.
  • Cook in the air fryer until the fish flakes easily, 10 to 12 minutes. Use the sling to remove cod fillets from the air fryer and serve immediately.

The air fryer has become a popular kitchen appliance in recent years, and for good reason. It offers a healthier alternative to frying with oil, while still achieving a crispy and flavorful result. One dish that has become a favorite for air fryer enthusiasts is cod. Cod is a mild-tasting and versatile white fish that can be cooked in a variety of ways. Here, we'll explore what air fryer cod recipes are and why they're a must-try.

The Benefits of Air Fryer Cod

Fish is a highly nutritious food that's rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins like B12 and D. However, traditional cooking methods like pan-frying or deep-frying often involve adding oil, which can add unnecessary calories and fats. The air fryer, on the other hand, uses circulated hot air to cook your food. This means you can achieve the same crispy texture without all the added oil, making it a healthier option for those watching their fat intake.

How to Choose the Right Cod

If you're planning to cook cod in the air fryer, the first step is to choose the right type of fish. Look for fresh cod that's firm, moist, and has a sweet odor. Avoid fish that has a sour smell or is slimy to the touch, as these could be signs of spoilage. Also, make sure to choose pieces that are of similar size and thickness, so they cook evenly in the air fryer.

Ways to Flavor Your Air Fryer Cod

While cod has a mild flavor, there are several ways you can season or marinade it to add more depth and complexity to the dish. Here are some ideas:
Lemon and Herb:
Mix olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, chopped herbs like thyme or parsley, salt, and black pepper. Rub the mixture over the cod and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
Taco Seasoning:
Coat the cod with a homemade or store-bought taco seasoning mix. This will add a spicy and smoky kick to the fish.
Parmesan and Garlic:
Combine grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, dried basil, and black pepper. Roll the cod in the mixture and air fry until golden brown and crispy.

Cooking Tips for Air Fryer Cod

Air fryer cod is a quick and easy dish that doesn't require a lot of prep work. Here are some tips for achieving the perfect result:
Preheat the Air Fryer:
Just like with an oven, it's important to preheat the air fryer before adding your food. This will ensure that the fish cooks evenly and doesn't stick to the basket.
Don't Overcrowd the Basket:
Make sure to leave enough space between each piece of cod, so the air can circulate and cook the fish evenly. Overcrowding the basket could result in uneven cooking or steaming instead of frying.
Flip the Fish:
Halfway through the cooking time, flip the cod over to ensure that both sides get crispy and browned.
Check for Doneness:
Cod is usually cooked when it reaches an internal temperature of 145°F. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the thickest part of the fish to ensure it's cooked through.

Final Thoughts

Air fryer cod is a healthy, flavorful, and easy-to-make dish that's perfect for a weeknight dinner or weekend lunch. By using the air fryer, you can achieve a crispy texture without all the added oil, making it a healthier alternative to traditional frying methods. With a variety of seasoning options, you can customize the dish to your liking and experiment with different flavors. So, next time you're craving fish, give air fryer cod a try, and taste the difference for yourself!

Tips for Making Air Fryer Cod Recipes

Air fryer cod recipes are a healthy and convenient way to cook cod, which is a versatile and mild-tasting fish that is perfect for all kinds of dishes. Whether you prefer battered cod or grilled fillets, there are many ways to prepare this fish in an air fryer. However, to get the best results, it's important to follow some valuable tips that will ensure your cod is crispy, moist, and flavorful every time.
1. Choose the Right Cod
The quality and freshness of the cod you use will have a big impact on the taste and texture of your dish. Look for cod that is firm, flaky, and odorless. It should have a bright, white color and no browning or discoloration. Avoid cod that is mushy, slimy, or has a fishy smell. You can buy fresh or frozen cod, but make sure it's thawed properly before cooking.
2. Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheating the air fryer is crucial for achieving crispy and evenly cooked cod. Set the temperature to the desired level and let it heat up for a few minutes before adding the fish. This will help create a hot and even cooking environment that will seal in the moisture and prevent the fish from sticking to the basket or tray.
3. Use Parchment Paper
Using parchment paper is a great way to prevent your cod from sticking to the air fryer basket or tray. Simply cut a piece of parchment paper to fit the basket, then lay the fish on top. This will also help keep the fish moist and tender, as it will prevent it from drying out or getting overcooked.
4. Season the Cod
Cod is a mild-tasting fish that can be seasoned in many ways. You can use a simple combination of salt and pepper, or try adding herbs, spices, or citrus zest for added flavor. Some popular seasonings for cod include garlic, thyme, rosemary, cumin, dill, lemon juice, and paprika. Just make sure to not over-season, as the natural flavor of the fish should still shine through.
5. Use a Light Coating
If you're making battered fish, use a light and crispy coating that won't overpower the delicate flavor of the cod. You can use breadcrumbs, panko, cornmeal, or a combination of these. Dip the fish in an egg wash or buttermilk, then coat it in the crumbs. Make sure to shake off any excess coating before placing the fish in the air fryer.
6. Cook at the Right Temperature
The cooking temperature will depend on the recipe and the size and thickness of the fish. However, most air fryer cod recipes can be cooked at around 375°F to 400°F for 10-15 minutes. If your cod is frozen or thicker than usual, you may need to increase the cooking time or temperature accordingly. To check if the fish is cooked, use a fork to flake it gently. The flesh should be opaque and easily separable.
7. Don't Overload the Air Fryer
To ensure that your cod cooks evenly, don't overcrowd the air fryer basket or tray. Leave enough space between the fish pieces so that they don't touch or overlap. This will allow the hot air to circulate around the fish, creating a crispy exterior and a tender interior.
8. Serve Immediately
Air fryer cod is best served immediately after cooking, to ensure that it's hot, crispy, and flavorful. You can serve it with a side of vegetables or a dipping sauce, such as tartar sauce, aioli, or salsa. Alternatively, you can use the cod in a sandwich, taco, or salad for a complete meal.
Conclusion
In conclusion, making air fryer cod recipes is a healthy and convenient way to enjoy this delicious fish. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that your cod is crispy, moist, and flavorful every time. Remember to choose the right cod, preheat the air fryer, use parchment paper, season the fish, use a light coating, cook at the right temperature, avoid overloading the fryer, and serve immediately. With these tips in mind, you can create a wide variety of air fryer cod recipes that are sure to please your taste buds.
