AIR FRYER OVEN BEEF JERKY

Air Fryer Oven Beef Jerky image

Using your air fryer oven makes whipping up a big batch of jerky as easy as 1-2-3. All it takes is a few ingredients and some patience. Make sure to cut your beef paper thin or plan on a longer drying time. I find it helpful to freeze the beef for an hour for easy slicing. Refrigerate any that is not consumed in 3 days.

Time 6h20m

Yield 3 lbs

Number Of Ingredients 16

5 lbs beef flank steak (or cut of your choice, just ensure you trim the fat)
2 cups Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 cups teriyaki sauce
3 teaspoons liquid smoke
1 cup soy sauce
4 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon cayenne powder
4 teaspoons black pepper
1 tablespoon sea salt
1 1/4 tablespoons red pepper flakes
4 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon maple syrup
3 bamboo skewers
aluminum foil

Steps:

  • Flash freeze beef for 20 minutes on cookie sheet during ingredient mixture.
  • Mix ingredients in extra large bowl with whisk until completely blended.
  • If beef is more than one inch thick, slice across to create equal thickness.
  • Cut beef between 1/8 - 1/ 4 inch thick slices, in addition to trimming as much fat off the meat as possible.
  • Incorporate beef into ingredients to cover.
  • Marinate beef overnight.
  • Pat dry beef slices and skewer beef onto bamboo, ensuring small space between slices for thorough dryness and leaving one inch on each end.
  • Hang beef skewers across oven rack so beef hangs freely.
  • Cover entire oven rack with skewers of meat.
  • Place aluminum foil on oven rack #2 at very bottom of oven to help catch drippings.
  • Set oven to lowest temperature (170 degrees in my case) and leave door ajar on hinge, letting beef sit for approximately 5-6 hours or until dry.
  • Check beef a few times throughout to ensure it is not actually baking, but simply drying out.
  • Once finished,
  • Let beef skewers rest for 10 minutes after drying, and then remove skewers from oven rack and let sit on tray until cool.
  • Remove beef strips from skewers and store them in an airtight container.

This is because the air fryer requires very little oil or fat to cook the meat, which means that the final product is much leaner and lower in calories. Air fryers are also great for making beef jerky because they cook the meat evenly and quickly, which helps to ensure that the jerky is tender and flavorful.

Ingredients

To make air fryer beef jerky, you will need the following ingredients: 1 pound of beef (flank steak or top round) 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)

Instructions

1. Begin by slicing the beef thinly, against the grain. You can do this by freezing the beef for about 20 minutes to make it easier to slice. 2. In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. If desired, you can also add a few drops of liquid smoke to give the jerky a smoky flavor. 3. Place the sliced beef into a large plastic bag and pour the marinade over the meat. Seal the bag and use your hands to gently massage the marinade into the meat. Place the bag into the refrigerator and let it marinate for at least 4 hours, or overnight if possible. 4. Preheat your air fryer to 160 degrees F. Place the marinated beef slices onto the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure they don't overlap. 5. Air fry the beef jerky for 10-12 minutes, depending on how thick your slices are. Check the jerky after 10 minutes and flip the slices over to ensure even cooking. 6. The first and most crucial step in making beef jerky in an air fryer is choosing the right cut of beef. The ideal cut of meat for beef jerky is lean meat like top round, bottom round, or flank steak. These cuts of meat have minimal fat content, making them perfect for making jerky. You should also slice the meat against the grain, which makes it tender and easy to chew.
2. Marinate the meat
Marinating the meat is essential when making beef jerky. A good marinade will add flavor to the meat and make it tender. There are plenty of beef jerky marinade recipes available online that you can use to marinate your meat. You should also make sure to marinate the meat for at least 8 hours or overnight, so the flavor gets locked in.

The beef jerky should be dry but not overcooked.
4. Flip the meat regularly
Flipping the meat regularly is crucial when making beef jerky in an air fryer. It ensures that the meat is evenly cooked and prevents it from sticking to the air fryer basket. You should flip the meat every 30 minutes to ensure that it's cooked evenly.
