Time 45m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 medium Granny Smith apples, diced
1 teaspoon cornstarch
2 teaspoons cold water
½ (14 ounce) package pastry for a 9-inch double crust pie
cooking spray
½ tablespoon grapeseed oil
¼ cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon milk, or more as needed

Steps:

  • Combine apples, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a non-stick skillet. Cook over medium heat until apples have softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Dissolve cornstarch in cold water. Stir into apple mixture and cook until sauce thickens, about 1 minute. Remove apple pie filling from heat and set aside to cool while you prepare the crust.
  • Unroll pie crust on a lightly floured surface and roll out slightly to smooth the surface of the dough. Cut the dough into rectangles small enough so that 2 can fit in your air fryer at one time. Repeat with remaining crust until you have 8 equal rectangles, re-rolling some of the scraps of dough if needed.
  • Wet the outer edges of 4 rectangles with water and place some apple filling in the center about 1/2-inch from the edges. Roll out the remaining 4 rectangles so that they are slightly larger than the filled ones. Place these rectangles on top of the filling; crimp the edges with a fork to seal. Cut 4 small slits in the tops of the pies.
  • Spray the basket of an air fryer with cooking spray. Brush the tops of 2 pies with grapeseed oil and transfer pies to the air fryer basket using a spatula.
  • Insert basket and set the temperature to 385 degrees F (195 degrees C). Bake until golden brown, about 8 minutes. Remove pies from the basket and repeat with the remaining 2 pies.
  • Mix together powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl. Brush glaze on warm pies and allow to dry. Serve pies warm or at room temperature.

Heading 4: Air fryer apple pies are a great alternative to traditional fried desserts that are normally full of unhealthy ingredients. With the air fryer, you can make your apple pies healthier and still get that crispy crust that you crave. This article will offer valuable tips on how to make the perfect air fryer apple pie, without including any recipes. Heading 4: Choose the Right Apples Apples are the star of the show when it comes to apple pie. They are the main ingredient that will make or break your pie. Choose apples that are tart, firm, and able to hold their shape when cooked. Some examples of good apple varieties for pies are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn. These apples are tart and will bring a nice balance to the sweetness of the pie. Heading 4: Cut the Apples Evenly Once you have chosen your apples, it's time to prepare them for the pie filling. Cut the apples evenly so that they will cook evenly in the air fryer. Unevenly cut apples will cook at different rates, resulting in some apples being overcooked and mushy while others are undercooked and hard. To ensure your apples cook evenly, use an apple peeler, corer, and slicer. Heading 4: Season the Apples To bring out the flavor of the apples, they need to be seasoned properly. Use a mixture of sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt to season the apples. This will enhance the natural sweetness of the apples and give them a warm, cozy flavor. For an added touch, you can also add a splash of vanilla extract or a squeeze of lemon juice. Heading 4: Don't Overfill the Pie When it comes to filling the pie, it's important not to overfill it. The crust needs room to expand and rise during baking, so make sure to leave some space between the top of the pie filling and the crust. Overfilling the pie can cause the crust to collapse and make a mess in the air fryer. Heading 4: Choose the Right Pie Crust The crust is just as important as the filling when it comes to apple pie. For air fryer apple pies, it's best to use pre-made pie crusts that are already rolled out and ready to use. This will save you time and effort. Look for pie crusts that are made with all-natural ingredients and have no added preservatives or chemicals. Heading 4: Preheat the Air Fryer Just like you would preheat your oven, preheating the air fryer is important to ensure that your pie cooks properly. Set the air fryer to the recommended temperature according to the manufacturer's instructions and let it preheat for a few minutes before adding the pie. This will help the crust get crispy and golden brown, while ensuring the filling is cooked to perfection. Heading 4: Brush the Crust with Butter To give your pie crust a beautiful, golden brown color and a crispy texture, brush it with melted butter before placing it in the air fryer. The butter will help the crust cook evenly and give it a rich, buttery flavor. Don't go overboard with the butter though as it can cause the crust to become soggy. Heading 4: Add Toppings After Baking If you plan on adding toppings to your apple pie, like whipped cream or ice cream, wait until after the pie has finished cooking. Adding toppings before baking the pie can cause them to melt and become a mess in the air fryer. Instead, wait until the pie has cooled slightly before adding any toppings. Heading 4: Let the Pie Cool Before Slicing After your air fryer apple pie has finished cooking, it's important to let it cool before slicing it. This will allow the filling to set and prevent it from being runny or falling apart. Give the pie at least 20-30 minutes to cool before slicing and serving. Heading 4: Conclusion Air fryer apple pies are a delicious and healthy alternative to traditional fried desserts. By choosing the right apples, seasoning them properly, and using the right pie crust, you can make the perfect air fryer apple pie every time. Remember to preheat the air fryer, not overfill the pie, and let it cool before slicing. With these tips, you're sure to impress your friends and family with your delicious air fryer apple pies.
