Absolute Best Ham and Cheese Sliders image

These yummy sliders are a huge hit with the family and with the folks at our local church when we bring these to brunch! Feel free to play around with the fillings....sometimes we make these with sliced turkey and cheddar cheese. I also use spicy brown mustard at times instead of plain yellow mustard. Have fun and enjoy!

Best Ham and Cheese Sliders image

Easy oven baked ham and cheese sliders are perfect for a crowd. Oozing with Swiss cheese and loaded with ham, these tasty sliders will disappear quickly.

Provided by Rachel Gurk

Categories     Sandwiches, Burgers & Wraps

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 14

12 sweet Hawaiian slider rolls (12 ounce package)
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon honey
12 oz thinly sliced deli sliced ham
12 oz sliced Swiss cheese
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (try the whole grain/country style type)
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
2 teaspoons dried minced onion
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 ºF. Spray a 11x8 baking dish with cooking spray.
  • Use a long serrated knife to slice horizontally through all 12 rolls at once, keeping all the rolls attached. Make the bottom half slightly thicker than the top half. Place bottom half of rolls in prepared baking dish.
  • In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons mustard, honey. Spread mixture on both cut sides of rolls.
  • Layer half of the cheese on bottom half of rolls. Top with ham, and remaining half of cheese, and then top with roll tops. It's fine if the ham and cheese overlap the edges of the individual rolls because you will be slicing them apart when they're baked.
  • In another small bowl, combine melted butter, 1 tablespoon mustard, poppyseeds, dried minced onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine, and then brush over the tops of the rolls. Don't worry if some runs down to the bottom of the pan.
  • Cover tightly with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 5-10 minutes or until tops of the rolls are crispy and golden brown.
  • Slice into individual rolls and serve immediately.

The Perfect Ham and Cheese Slider Recipe: The Basics

Ham and cheese sliders are undoubtedly one of the easiest, delicious, and crowd-pleasing dishes that you can make. This dish is a perfect snack or appetizer for any party, and the best part is that it only requires a few ingredients and can be prepared in no time. Whether you're a beginner cook or a seasoned chef, there is no wrong way to make this classic dish. However, there are a few basic rules that you should keep in mind when making ham and cheese sliders.
Bread
The bread you choose for your sliders is crucial. You can use Hawaiian rolls, ciabatta bread, pretzel rolls, or any other bread that you prefer. Just make sure that the bread is fresh and soft, and not too dense. You don't want the bread to overpower the flavor of the ham and cheese.
Ham
When it comes to ham, you should choose the highest-quality ham that you can find. You can use thicker or thinner slices depending on your preference. If you’re preparing sliders for a party, it’s better to go with thinner slices, as they’ll be easier to eat. Remember, the ham is the star of this dish, so it’s essential to get it right.
Cheese
The cheese is another crucial ingredient that you cannot forget. You can use any type of cheese that you like, but cheddar, Swiss, and mozzarella are traditional favorites. However, you can experiment with other types of cheese as well. Make sure that the cheese is sliced thin so that it can melt evenly.
Sauce
Finally, the sauce. This is the secret ingredient that takes your ham and cheese sliders to the next level. Whether you choose to use mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, or a combination of all three, the sauce should complement the flavors of the ham and cheese.

Tips for Perfect Ham and Cheese Sliders

Now that you know the basics of making ham and cheese sliders, here are some tips to take your sliders to the next level.
Bake the Sliders
While you can prepare sliders on a stovetop or griddle, baking is the best way to make sure that the cheese is melted, and the bread is crispy. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and assemble the sliders on a baking sheet. Cover the sliders with foil, and bake for about 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and the bread is crispy.
Prepare in Advance
You can prepare ham and cheese sliders in advance and keep them in the fridge until you're ready to bake them. Assemble the sliders on a baking sheet, cover them with plastic wrap, and store them in the fridge until you're ready to bake them. However, make sure that you remove them from the fridge for at least 30 minutes before baking, so they come to room temperature.
Experiment with Different Ingredients
While ham and cheese sliders are perfect on their own, there's no harm in experimenting with different ingredients. You can add bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, or any other ingredients that you like to make your sliders more flavorful.
Use a Sharp Knife
When slicing your sliders, make sure that you use a sharp knife. A serrated knife works best as it can cut through the bread without crushing it. Cutting your sliders neatly will make them look more presentable and appetizing.
