A REAL MAINE "ITALIAN"

A Real Maine

Why these sandwiches are called Italians is a mystery to me since not one thing on them is Italian. But here in Maine you can go to any little general store or sandwich shop and get an Italian. Ham is the original, but other meats can be substituted (you have to specify like roast beef italian). Amato's is a sandwich shop up here that boasts the "Home of the Real Maine Italian".

The state of Maine is famous for its bountiful seafood, lobster, and blueberries. However, one food item that you will find on every street is the Maine Italian sandwich. This sandwich is not only unique to the state of Maine but has also become a part of its cultural identity. A true Maine Italian sandwich is not just a sandwich; it is an experience - one that is steeped in history and tradition.

What is a Maine Italian sandwich?

A Maine Italian sandwich is a sandwich made up of a long, crusty roll filled with a variety of cold cuts, cheese, vegetables, and condiments. In Maine, you will find this sandwich in almost every sandwich shop and convenience store, and each one is unique. While it may resemble a typical Italian sub found elsewhere in the United States, the Maine version has its own distinctiveness.

The ingredients

A Maine Italian sandwich is made up of a variety of ingredients, including cold cuts, cheese, vegetables, and condiments. The traditional ingredients include salami, cappicola, mortadella, provolone cheese, onions, green peppers, black olives, tomatoes, and pickles. Some variations include lettuce, banana peppers, and mayonnaise.

The bread

The bread used for a Maine Italian sandwich is just as important as the fillings. The bread must be crusty and hearty enough to hold up to the fillings without becoming too soggy. The traditional roll used is known as a "New England-style" roll - this is a long, thin roll with a very crusty exterior and a soft interior.

The history

The history of the Maine Italian sandwich dates back to the early 1900s when Italian immigrants started settling in Maine. These immigrants brought with them the tradition of the Italian sub sandwich. As the sandwich gained popularity in Maine, local delis and sandwich shops started creating their own version of the sandwich. Over time, the Maine Italian sandwich evolved to include local ingredients and flavors, becoming the unique culinary experience it is today.

How to make a Maine Italian sandwich

Making a Maine Italian sandwich is relatively easy, and while the exact ingredients and proportions can vary, there are a few basic steps to follow:
Step 1:
Gather all the ingredients: a crusty roll, cold cuts (salami, cappicola, mortadella), cheese (provolone), vegetables (onions, green peppers, black olives, tomatoes, and pickles), and condiments (mayonnaise or oil and vinegar).
Step 2:
Slice the roll in half lengthwise.
Step 3:
Layer the cold cuts and cheese on top of the bottom half of the roll. Be sure to layer the meats evenly to ensure that each bite has a variety of flavors.
Step 4:
Add the vegetables on top of the meat and cheese. Be sure to distribute the vegetables evenly across the length of the sandwich.
Step 5:
Drizzle the condiments on top of the vegetables. If using oil and vinegar, be sure to spread it evenly across the length of the sandwich.
Step 6:
Place the top half of the roll on top of the ingredients.
Step 7:
Wrap the sandwich tightly in parchment paper or plastic wrap, and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Conclusion

A true Maine Italian sandwich is a culinary masterpiece that embodies the state's culture and history. With its unique blend of meats, cheese, vegetables, and condiments, this sandwich is a must-try for anyone visiting Maine. While the exact recipe can differ from place to place, the essence of the Maine Italian sandwich remains the same - a delicious and savory experience that is nothing short of amazing.

Valuable Tips When Making A Real Maine Italian Recipe

Italian cuisine is known all over the world for its mouthwatering flavors, rich aromas, and delectable taste that tickles the taste buds. With countless dishes to choose from, Italian cuisine offers something for everyone. If you are looking to make a real Maine Italian recipe, you are going to want to follow these valuable tips to ensure you come up with a pasta dish or sauce that is delicious, authentic, and full of flavor.
Begin with Fresh Ingredients
One of the most important tips when making an Italian recipe is to start with fresh ingredients. Fresh, local ingredients are essential to the success of your dish. Make sure to use high-quality olive oil, cheese, and tomatoes. Additionally, use fresh herbs, including parsley, basil, and oregano, to enhance the taste of your dish.
Choose the Right Pasta
When making an Italian recipe, it is essential to choose the right pasta type. The type of pasta you choose can have a significant impact on the flavor and texture of your dish. For example, if you are looking to make a meat sauce, you may want to opt for rigatoni or a similar pasta shape that will hold the sauce well. On the other hand, if you are making a light tomato sauce, a thin spaghetti or angel hair pasta will be the best option.
Seasoning is Key
Seasoning is critical when it comes to making a delicious and authentic Italian recipe. Seasonings such as garlic, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes can add a depth of flavor to any dish. However, be sure to taste test as you season to ensure the dish is not too salty or too spicy.
Don't Overcook the Pasta
Overcooking your pasta is one of the most common mistakes when making an Italian recipe. It is important to follow the recommended cooking time for your pasta type and check the pasta frequently to ensure it is cooked to the desired level of firmness. Overcooked pasta can lead to a mushy or gooey texture, ruining the dish's overall flavor and adding an unpleasant texture.
Experiment with Different Cheeses
Italians love their cheese, and they are known for using a wide variety of different cheese types in their pasta dishes. Experiment with different cheese types to create unique and delicious flavors. For example, grated Parmesan cheese can be added to a tomato sauce to add a rich, nutty flavor, while mozzarella cheese can be used to create a creamy and delicious lasagna.
Use the Right Kitchen Tools
Using the right kitchen tools can make a significant difference in how your Italian recipe turns out. Invest in a good-quality pasta pot that can hold sufficient water to cook your pasta correctly. Additionally, ensure you have a good-quality chef's knife, cutting board, and a sturdy colander for draining your pasta.
Don't Overload the Sauce
When making a pasta dish, it can be tempting to pile on the sauce to add more flavor. However, overloading the sauce can lead to a soggy and unappetizing dish. Start by adding a small amount of sauce to your pasta and gradually add more as necessary.
Finish with Fresh Herbs
Fresh herbs can add the perfect finishing touch to your Italian recipe, giving it an authentic Italian flavor. Garnish your dish with fresh parsley or basil to add a pop of color and flavor to your dish.
Take Inspiration from Family Recipes
Italian cuisine is full of family recipes passed down through the generations. Take inspiration from family recipes and adapt them to create your own unique twist on the classic dish. Additionally, keep a record of the recipes you make and the adjustments you make to the classic dish for future reference.
Enjoy Your Creation
The most important tip of all when making an Italian recipe is to relax and enjoy the process. Italian cooking is not about perfection but about creating delicious and memorable meals to share with family and friends. With a little experimentation and effort, you can create a pasta dish that will impress even the most discerning palates. In summary, when making a real Maine Italian recipe, start with fresh ingredients, choose the right pasta type, season your dish carefully, avoid overcooking the pasta, experiment with different cheese types, use the right kitchen tools, do not overload the sauce, finish with fresh herbs, take inspiration from family recipes, and most importantly, enjoy the process of creating an authentic Italian dish.
