PIZZA PIE

Make a deep-dish Chicago-style pizza pie to serve everyone at once. This is a veggie version, but you can add any fillings you prefer

Provided by Tom Kerridge

Categories     Dinner

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 12

400g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting
7g sachet fast-action dried yeast
pinch of golden caster sugar
1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for proving and the tin
300ml passata
1 tbsp tomato purée
1 tbsp olive oil
1 garlic clove, finely grated
1 tsp dried oregano
2 large handfuls of grated mozzarella (about 150g)
20 black olives, pitted and halved
handful of basil leaves

Steps:

  • To make the dough, combine the flour, yeast and sugar in a large bowl and make a well in the middle. Tip in 1 tsp salt, the oil and 250ml tepid water. Bring the mixture together into a dough using your hands, then tip onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 mins until smooth and elastic. Drizzle a bit more oil into the bowl, add the dough, cover with a damp tea towel and leave to rise for 35-40 mins, or until doubled in size. Meanwhile, combine all the ingredients for the sauce in a bowl.
  • Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Lightly oil a 23cm springform cake tin. Tip the dough out onto a floured surface, and knock the air out of it a few times using your hands. Remove a quarter of the dough and set aside, then roll the rest out thinly so it's large enough to line the tin with some overhanging. Press the dough into the base and up the side of the tin.
  • Spread half the sauce over the pizza dough base, then sprinkle with half the mozzarella and half each of the olives and basil. Roll the reserved dough out into a circle that's large enough to fit over the first layer of filling, then lay it over the top. Top with the remaining sauce, most of the remaining cheese, and the rest of the olives and basil. Fold the overhanging dough over the filling slightly, then scatter the remaining cheese over the exposed filling in the middle.
  • Transfer the tin to a baking tray and bake for 45-50 mins until golden and crisp. Remove from the oven, undo the springform clip and leave to cool for 20 mins before removing from the tin and cutting into wedges to serve.

Pizza is a popular Italian dish that has made its way into various cuisines around the world. A plain pizza pie is a basic pizza recipe that usually consists of three main ingredients - pizza dough, tomato sauce, and cheese. It is a simple yet delicious meal that can be customized according to one's taste.

Pizza Dough

The pizza dough is the foundation of any pizza recipe. It is made from flour, water, yeast, salt, and sugar. The dough needs to be kneaded and left to rise for a few hours before it is ready to be used. A good pizza dough should be elastic, not too thick, and not too thin. It should be able to hold the toppings without becoming soggy.

Tomato Sauce

A plain pizza pie recipe usually calls for a tomato sauce made from fresh or canned tomatoes. The sauce should be cooked with garlic, onions, herbs, and spices to give it flavor. The tomato sauce should be spread evenly over the pizza dough, leaving a little space around the edges for the crust.

Cheese

A plain pizza pie recipe requires cheese, which is usually mozzarella. The cheese should be grated and spread evenly over the tomato sauce. The cheese will melt when the pizza is cooked, and it will give the pizza a creamy texture.

Toppings

One of the best things about making a plain pizza pie recipe is the ability to customize the toppings. Popular pizza toppings include pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and olives. However, a plain pizza pie recipe usually does not call for any toppings, which makes it simple and delicious.

Cooking

A plain pizza pie recipe can be cooked in an oven or on a grill. The oven should be preheated to a high temperature, and the pizza should be placed on a baking sheet or a pizza stone. The pizza should be cooked for 10-15 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted. A pizza cooked on a grill should be placed on a pizza stone and cooked until the crust is crispy.

Serving

A plain pizza pie recipe is best served hot and fresh out of the oven. It can be sliced into small or large pieces, depending on the number of people eating. The pizza can be served with a side salad or garlic bread.

Conclusion

A plain pizza pie recipe is a simple yet delicious meal that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is easy to customize with different toppings, and it can be cooked in an oven or on a grill. With the basic ingredients of pizza dough, tomato sauce, and cheese, anyone can make a perfect plain pizza pie recipe.
Pizza is one of the most popular foods worldwide, and it is hard to find someone who does not like it. It is a versatile food, and you can modify it to fit your taste and preference. A plain pizza is one of the simplest, yet most satisfying pizzas, and it is a great place to start when making homemade pizza. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips for making a plain pizza pie recipe.

1. Choose High-Quality Ingredients

The key to a delicious pizza is using high-quality ingredients. Use fresh, high-quality flour and top-quality mozzarella cheese. Top-quality ingredients may seem a bit more expensive, but they make a significant difference in the taste and texture of the pizza. Besides, high-quality ingredients are healthier and more nutritious.

2. Proofing the Dough

Proofing the dough is crucial in making a perfect plain pizza. Proofing allows the yeast to work and produce carbon dioxide, which will cause the dough to rise. For a plain pizza, you need to let the dough proof for at least an hour. Cover the dough with a damp towel to prevent it from drying out, and allow it to rise in a warm, draft-free area.

3. Kneading the Dough

Kneading the dough is also important in making a perfect pizza. Kneading allows the gluten to develop, and it helps to create a chewy, elastic crust. Knead the dough for at least 10 minutes until it becomes smooth, soft, and elastic. When you have finished kneading, cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes.

4. Rolling the Dough

When rolling out the dough, make sure you use flour to prevent it from sticking. Gently flatten the dough with your hands before rolling it out. You can also use a rolling pin to press the dough out to the desired thickness.

5. Preheating the Oven

Preheating the oven is critical when making pizza. It ensures that the oven is at the correct temperature before baking. Preheat your oven to a high temperature of 450 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit before you start baking.

6. Using a Pizza Stone or Pizza Pan

Using a pizza stone or pizza pan will help you achieve a crunchy crust. A pizza stone distributes heat evenly and absorbs moisture from the crust during baking, resulting in a crispy crust. A pizza pan is also a great alternative if you do not have a pizza stone.

7. Adding the Sauce and Cheese

When making a plain pizza, make sure you use a good quality pizza sauce. Spread a thin layer of sauce over the dough, leaving a half-inch border around the edges. Add the cheese on top of the sauce, making sure it covers the entire pizza. You can use any type of cheese you prefer, but mozzarella cheese is the best for making pizza.

8. Choosing the Right Toppings

Choosing the right toppings is essential to making a great pizza. For a plain pizza, you do not need many toppings. You can add a few toppings like sliced tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and bell pepper. Make sure you do not add too many toppings, or the pizza will become soggy.

9. Baking Time

Bake the pizza for about 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Keep a close eye on the pizza during baking to avoid burning it. Use a pizza peel or spatula to remove the pizza from the oven once it is ready.

10. Letting the Pizza Rest

Allow the pizza to rest for a few minutes before slicing it. This allows the cheese to set and prevents the toppings from slipping off the pizza. Slice the pizza into equal portions using a sharp pizza cutter or knife, and serve hot.

Conclusion

Making a plain pizza is easy, and it requires no fancy tricks or elaborate toppings. Stick to the basics, and use high-quality ingredients, let the dough rise and proof, and bake it in a preheated oven for a crispy crust. Follow these valuable tips when making plain pizza, and you are sure to impress your family and friends with your delicious homemade pizza.
