While growing up, my boys enjoyed helping me make this beverage with "broomsticks." Now I use the recipe with my grandchildren. -Paula Marchesi, Lenhartsville, Pennsylvania

Number Of Ingredients 7

8 orange candy slices
8 cinnamon sticks (5 inches)
8 pieces black shoestring licorice (10 inches)
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup red-hot candies
6 cups milk
3/4 cup instant chocolate drink mix

Steps:

  • For broomsticks, on a lightly sugared surface, roll each orange slice into a 1/4-in.-thick triangle. With wet scissors, snip bottoms of triangles to resemble broom bristles. Wrap pointed end of each around a cinnamon stick. Coil a licorice piece around the top of each orange slice to secure to cinnamon stick; set aside. , In a large saucepan, bring water and red-hots to a boil, stirring frequently until dissolved. Whisk in milk and chocolate drink mix. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat until hot. Pour into cups or mugs. Serve with broomstick stirrers.

1/4 cup red cinnamon candies
6 cups milk
1/2 cup powdered chocolate milk mix
canned chocolate whipped cream (optional)

Steps:

  • Bring water and cinnamon candies to boil over medium high heat in medium saucepan, stirring until candies melt.
  • Add milk; whisk in drink mix and return to a simmer.
  • Pour into mugs. Top with canned chocolate whipped topping.

I have been making this for years, for Halloween and all through the fall/winter. Its wonderful for holiday gatherings, and a nice change from eggnog. Its even great to take along in a thermos to those chilly football games! (Makes 30 5 fl.oz. servings)

1 gallon fresh sweet apple cider (the unfiltered, cloudy kind)
1 (750 ml) bottle brotherhood holiday wine (Brotherhood is the name of the winery or brand of this particular lightly spiced red wine.)
12 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks (each about 3-4 inches long)

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a large pot (or"cauldron").
  • Simmer,stirring occasionally until very hot.
  • Serve in heatproof punch cups or mugs.
  • **Can also be made in a microwave,crockpot or electric coffee percolator (place spices in basket) instead of stovetop.
  • If there are leftover, it can be stored (tightly covered) in the refrigerator and then reheated later.
  • Remove cinnamon sticks and cloves before storing.
