This is a very delicious chocolate cake that my family has been making for years and years. This cake is delicious served plain or frosted with your favorite frosting. My family likes it with chocolate or cream cheese frosting.

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 cup(s) flour
2 cup(s) sugar
1/2 cup(s) unsweetened baking cocoa
2 teaspoon(s) soda
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
2 tablespoon(s) vinegar
3/4 cup(s) vegetable oil
1 tablespoon(s) vanilla
2 cup(s) "cold" water

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl add all the dry ingredients.
  • With a fork mix all the ingredients up until it's all combined together.
  • Make 3 holes in the mixture for the vanilla , oil and the vinegar.
  • Pour the COLD water all at once in and mix using a fork only.
  • Do not over mix , mix just enough to combine . You do not want to get out every little lump , just mix to break up all the flour clumps.
  • Pour into a ungreased cake pan.
  • Pound the cake on the counter to settle the cake and pop any bubbles that formed from mixing.
  • Bake in a preheated oven @ 350° for 35-40 minutes or until a tooth pick comes out clean when inserted in the center of the cake ; set aside and let cool before frosting the cake.
  • This cake is delicious with or with out frosting and you can also dust it lightly with powdered sugar...enjoy.

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup water

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Sift flour, sugar, salt, soda, and cocoa together into an 8x8 inch ungreased cake pan. Make three depressions. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well. Pour water over all, and stir well with fork.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 40 minutes, or until tooth pick inserted comes out clean. Frost with your favorite icing.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅓ cup butter
¼ cup water
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
¼ cup buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup finely chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • Sterilize 2 (1 pint) straight sided wide mouth canning jars, lids and rings by boiling for 10 minutes. Keep the lids and rings in the hot water until needed. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C)
  • In a small bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda and cinnamon. Set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine butter, water and cocoa powder. Heat and stir until butter is melted and mixture is well blended. Pour into a large bowl.
  • Stir in Flour mixture and blend. Add buttermilk, egg and vanilla and beat by hand until smooth. Stir in nuts.
  • Distribute evenly into the 2 prepared canning jars. Place the jars on a cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted deep into center of cake comes out clean.
  • Using heavy oven mitts, remove cakes from oven one at a time. Place a lid, then a ring onto the jars and screw them down tightly. Place the jars on the counter and listen for them to "ping" as they seal. If you miss the "ping", wait until they are completely cool and press on the top of the lid. If it doesn't move at all, it's sealed.

2/3 cup cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/3 cups sugar

Steps:

  • Layer ingredients in jar in order given in a 1 quart canning jar.
  • It is helpful to tap jar lightly on a padded surface (towel on counter) as you layer the ingredients to make all ingredients fit neatly.
  • Use scissors to cut a 9 inch-diameter circle from fabric of your choice.
  • Center fabric circle over lid and secure with a rubber band.
  • Tie on a raffia or ribbon bow to cover the rubber band.
  • Attach a card with the following directions: Crazy Cake 3/4 cup Vegetable Oil, 2 tsp Vinegar, 1 tsp Vanilla and 2 cups Water.
  • Stir cake ingredients together using a wire whisk or fork, making certain that all ingredients are completely mixed together.

1 quart wide mouth jar
2 c flour
2/3 c cocoa
3/4 tsp salt
1-1/2 tsp baking powder
1-1/3 c sugar
3/4 c vegetable oil
2 tsp white vinegar
1 tsp vanilla
1 c water

Steps:

  • 1. Layer in order, the first 5 ingredients into a clean and sterilized mason jar. Secure with a sterilized lid. Decorate with a beautiful ribbon. Tape the following directions to the side of the jar.
  • 2. To bake: In a large bowl, use the contents of jar, with the last four ingredients. Mix together using a wire whisk. Making sure all ingredients are completely mixed together. grease and floured 9x9 cake pan . Bake in a 350 for 35 minutes. When cool sprinkle powdered sugar on top. This cake is so good and moist frosting is not needed. Note: Some people call it a Depression Cake..because of no eggs.
