400g penne
200g can yellowfin tuna in olive oil
190g jar basil pesto (or try a different flavour such as spinach, tomato or aubergine pesto)
100g cheddar , grated
250g punnet cherry tomato , halved

Steps:

  • Boil the pasta. Meanwhile, tip the tuna and its oil into a large bowl with the pesto. Mash together with a wooden spoon. Stir in a third of the cheese and all of the tomatoes. Heat the grill to high.
  • When the pasta is cooked, drain and toss through the pesto mix. Tip into a shallow baking dish and scatter with the remaining cheese. Place the dish under the grill for 3-4 mins until just melted, then serve with a green salad and garlic bread.

A different take on a family-favourite - Tuna Pasta Bake! The dish is transformed with an addition of pesto, cherry tomatoes and mozzarella. Simple to make, budget-friendly and certainly full of flavour, our Tuna and Pesto Pasta Bake is a fancier take on a more traditional pasta dinner!

280 g pasta (fusilli, penne, or conchiglie)
320 g tinned tuna chunks in spring water or brine ((2 tins) drained)
1 lemon (zest and juice)
190 g green pesto
200 g cherry tomatoes (cut in half)
100 g spring onions (approx 6-7) (finely sliced)
125 g mozzarella ball (drained)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C Fan. Cook the pasta for 2 minutes less than stated on the packet and drain, reserving approx 100ml of pasta water.
  • In a large bowl, mix the tuna, lemon juice, zest, pesto, halved tomatoes and 2/3 of spring onions. Season with salt and pepper. Mix in the cooked pasta and 100ml of pasta water.
  • Transfer the mixture to an ovenproof dish. Tear the mozzarella ball into pieces and scatter across the top. Finally, add the remaining spring onions. Bake for 20 minutes until mozzarella melts and starts to brown slightly.

500 g dried penne pasta
2 teaspoons olive oil
3 green onions, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
2 sticks celery, finely chopped
250 g cherry tomatoes, quartered
120 g Baby Spinach
1/4 cup basil pesto
1 cup light evaporated milk
2 (185 g) cans tuna in olive oil, Chunk Style
1/2 cup grated light mozzarella cheese
mixed salad leaves, to serve

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 180°C Cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling, salted water, following packet directions, until tender. Drain.
  • Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add onions, garlic and celery. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until onion is soft. Add tomatoes. Cook for 2 minutes. Add spinach, pesto and milk. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until spinach just wilts. Add pasta to pan with tuna (undrained). Season with salt and pepper. Toss gently to combine.
  • Spoon mixture into an 8 cup-capacity ceramic baking dish. Top with cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden. Stand for 5 minutes before serving.

This easy tuna pesto pasta with homemade cashew basil pesto and tinned tuna is a quick and easy midweek meal on the table in 15 minutes, and is loved by both kids and adults.

350 g (12 oz) dried pasta (($0.70 / £0.53p))
60 g (2 c) fresh basil, larger stalks removed (($3.00 / £0.55))
40 g (½ c) parmesan cheese, grated (($1.00 / £0.62p))
4-5 tablespoons olive oil (($0.64 / £0.32))
40 g (¼ c) cashew nuts (($0.99 / £0.39p))
1 tablespoon lemon juice (($0.79 / £0.30p))
1 tablespoon lemon zest (0)
1 tablespoon olive oil (($0.16 / £0.08p))
2 cloves garlic, crushed (($0.26 / £0.05))
370 g (13 oz) tin / can tuna, in oil or water, drained (($4.00 / £3.00)*)
sea salt / kosher salt (($0.01 / £0.01))
cracked black pepper (($0.01 / £0.01))

Steps:

  • Cook pasta in boiling water according to packet instructions less 1 minute.
  • While the pasta is cooking, make the pesto: In a small blender/mini food processor place the basil, grated parmesan, cashew nuts, 1 tablespoon lemon zest, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 4 tablespoons olive oil.
  • Blend until smooth, adding a little more olive oil if it seems dry. Place to one side.
  • Drain the pasta keeping 120ml (½ c) of the pasta water.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a medium frying pan and fry the crushed garlic over a medium heat for 1 minute.
  • Add the drained tuna and heat through.
  • Stir through the cooked pasta and then the pesto, adding a little of the pasta water if it seems dry.
  • Check for seasoning, adding a squeeze of lemon juice, salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Serve straight away.

600g rigatoni
50g butter
50g plain flour
600ml milk
250g strong cheddar, grated
2 x 160g cans tuna steak in spring water, drained
330g can sweetcorn, drained
large handful chopped parsley

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4.
  • Boil 600g rigatoni for 2 mins less time than stated on the pack.
  • To make the sauce, melt 50g butter in a saucepan and stir in 50g plain flour.
  • Cook for 1 min, then gradually stir in 600ml milk to make a thick white sauce.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in all but a handful of the 250g grated cheddar.
  • Drain the pasta, mix with the white sauce, two 160g drained cans tuna, one 330g drained can sweetcorn and a large handful of chopped parsley, then season.
  • Transfer to a baking dish and top with the rest of the grated cheddar.
  • Bake for 15-20 mins until the cheese on top is golden and starting to brown.

400g fusilli pasta
100g frozen pea
50g butter
50g plain flour
600ml milk
1 tsp Dijon mustard
2 x 195g cans tuna , drained
4 spring onions , sliced
198g can sweetcorn , drained
100g cheddar , grated

Steps:

  • Bring a pan of water to the boil. Add the pasta and cook, following pack instructions, until tender. Add the peas for the final 3 mins cooking time.
  • Meanwhile, melt the butter in a pan over a medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 mins. Add the milk, whisking constantly, then slowly bring to the boil, stirring often, until sauce thickens. Remove from the heat, add the mustard and season well.
  • Heat the grill to medium. Drain the pasta and peas, then return to the pan and stir in the tuna, spring onions, sweetcorn and sauce. Tip into a shallow baking dish, top with the cheddar and cook under the grill for 5 mins or until golden and bubbling.
