TEXAS HOTDOG SAUCE

Texas Hotdog Sauce image

When I was small we would always stop and get hot dogs smothered in a flavorful meat sauce on the way to Gram's. Dad worked and experimented, and finally came up with a sauce that tasted just as good. Be sure to spread the hot dog rolls with mustard and top them off with chopped onion.

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 lb ground beef (73% lean or less)
8 oz Plain tomato sauce (ie: Hunts)
8 oz Water
1 Tbs Chili Powder
1 Tbs Crushed Red Pepper
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp salt

Steps:

  • Brown beef in skillet with tablespoon of oil. Grind spices together into fine powder. Drain beef. In 2qt+ pot or crockpot, mix together beef, water, tomato sauce, and spices. Simmer for a minimum of one hour. If crockpoting, simmer on low for 12 to 24hrs, checking/stirring occassionally. Added water if sauce starts to dry out. The longer this receipe simmer the better the texture and spiciness of the sauce. Excess can be frozen and reheated in a double-boiler or crockpot.
