A cheap, easy way to make sweet & sour sauce. All of these ingredients are in the most basic pantry! My mum always made this with chicken wings in the crock pot. Cheap and very tasty!

1/4 cup chicken broth
1/4 cup catsup
1 tablespoon soy sauce
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup white vinegar

Steps:

  • Mix it all together in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  • Turn off immediately and serve with your favorite eggrolls, chicken, pork, veggies-- the possibilities are endless!

Sweet and sour sauce for meatballs and peppers. Can substitute pineapple juice for wine if adding pineapples.

1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon soya sauce
1/4 cup white wine
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon cold water

Steps:

  • Heat ketchup, sugar, water, wine, vinegar, soya sauce in a medium pan over medium, stirring constantly.
  • Mix cornstarch and water together in a small bowl. Stir slowly into sauce mixture. Stir until thickened.
  • Can add cooked meatballs, peppers, onions and carrots into pan. Heat for 20 minutes, or until late warm throughout.

After having to put up with the so-called 'sweet and sour sauce' that they serve in American Asian restaurants (theirs are only sweet), I got this recipe from a friend in Alaska when I was stationed up there years ago.

1 cup white sugar
¾ cup chicken broth
¾ cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 clove garlic, minced
¼ cup cold water
3 tablespoons cornstarch

Steps:

  • Stir sugar, chicken broth, white vinegar, vegetable oil, soy sauce, salt, and garlic together in a saucepan; bring to a boil.
  • Whisk water and cornstarch together until cornstarch is dissolved; whisk into the boiling mixture. Cook sauce until thickened, 5 to 7 minutes.
