My homemade croutons make any salad outstanding.-Shelley McKinney, New Castle, Indiana

Yield 3 cups.

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
Pinch salt
6 slices day-old bread, cubed

Steps:

  • In an ungreased 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan, combine the butter, oil and seasonings. Heat in a 300° oven until butter is melted. Remove from the oven; stir to combine. , Add bread cubes and toss to coat. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring frequently. Cool. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Steps:

  • In an ungreased 9 X 13 X 2 pan, combine all ingredients except bread.
  • Place in a 300 degree oven until butter is completely melted.
  • Remove from oven and stir to mix.
  • Add bread cubes and toss to coat well.
  • Bake for 10-15 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring frequently.
  • Cool.
  • Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

A seedy multigrain bread brings a new, nutty dimension to these seasoned, buttery croutons. These are great served warm on a cold, fresh salad.

½ loaf multigrain bread, cubed
¼ cup butter, melted
2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning (such as Emeril's Essence®), divided
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese, divided
1 tablespoon onion powder, divided

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Place bread cubes in a large bowl; drizzle butter over cubes. Toss to evenly coat. Sprinkle half the Cajun seasoning, half the Parmesan cheese, and half the onion powder over cubes; toss to coat. Spread coated bread cubes onto the prepared baking sheet; sprinkle remaining Cajun seasoning, Parmesan cheese, and onion powder onto cubes.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 7 minutes; stir and continue baking until crisp, about 8 more minutes.

No. 1 Spicy Seasoned Croutons image

Use day old or older bread, white, whole wheat or seven grain,any except rye, break it in small chunks or cut in cubes, place on jelly roll pans. Coat with the seasoning and use on top of tomato based soups, stews or casseroles. Especially good with corn.Yummm!

1 loaf sliced bread
1/3 cup olive oil
1/3 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon onion salt
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried celery flakes
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Cube or pull apart small chunks of sliced bread.
  • Place on jelly roll pans. Spread out.
  • Preheat oven 300*.
  • Put in oven, cook and turn twice for 25 minutes.
  • In large glass measuring cup add olive oil and butter.
  • Cook in microwave for 2 minutes at 50% power.
  • Add the spices and whisk.
  • Take out of the oven and pour slowly over bread cubes.
  • Turn with a spatula until all are coated.
  • Sprinkle parmesan cheese over the cubes.
  • Bake 20 minutes.
  • Cool. Store in bags and freeze or the refrigerator in air tight container.

Really, the seasonings are just a suggestion. Use any combination of seasonings that you want. I often use Pampered Chef Rosemary Herb or Kinders Italian Chop House seasoning blends.

4 tablespoon(s) unsalted butter
dash(es) lawrey's salt
dash(es) garlic salt
dash(es) lemon pepper
dash(es) crushed red pepper

Steps:

  • Cut the bread into crouton-sized cubes. Melt the butter in a skillet large enough to hold the bread in a single layer. Add seasonings and stir to combine.
  • Add bread cubes all at once and stir to coat evenly. Spread on a cookie sheet in a single layer.
  • Bake for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and leave in the oven for 2 hours. Cool and store in an airtight container.
