One of those keeper, appetizers. These can be made ahead, frozen and ready in just a few minutes when unexpected company pops in. And most ingredients are on hand. Everyone loves this one.

1 loaf rye cocktail bread
1 lb hot pork sausage (breakfast style)
1 lb Velveeta cheese
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 (4 ounce) can mushrooms, chopped
1/4 green pepper, chopped
1/8 teaspoon cayenne

Steps:

  • Brown sausage and drain.
  • Melt cheese, add remaining ingredients.
  • Spread on Rye cocktail rounds.
  • Place on cookie sheet and freeze. After freezing, they can be stored in plastic bags until ready for use.
  • Heat on cookie sheet in preheated oven at 350°F for 5 minutes till cheese bubbles.

  • Melt Velveeta cheese into mixture.
  • Spread 1-2 tablespoons on party rye rounds, add tomato, if desired, run under broiler until browned.

⅓ cup mayonnaise
⅓ onion, grated, juice reserved
1 (1 pound) loaf cocktail rye bread

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Place the Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, onion and reserved onion juice in a blender or food processor. Blend thoroughly. Spread the mixture evenly on slices of cocktail rye bread.
  • Place cocktail rye bread slices on a large baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven 10 minutes, or until lightly toasted.

1 pound process cheese (Velveeta), cubed
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons ketchup

Steps:

When we moved from the Midwest to Kentucky, we were invited to a neighborhood gathering, where this appetizer was served. Hanky panky-as it's often called around here-is traditionally served at Derby Day parties, but at our home it's become a year-round favorite.

1/2 pound bulk pork sausage
1-1/2 teaspoons chili powder
8 ounces Velveeta, shredded

Fresh parsley sprigs, stems removed

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook the beef and sausage over medium heat until no longer pink, 5-7 minutes, breaking into crumbles; drain. Add chili powder and cheese; cook and stir until cheese is melted. 1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground pork sausage
1 pound processed cheese food
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 (1 pound) loaf cocktail rye bread

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a medium baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Place ground beef and ground pork sausage in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain and set aside.
  • Place processed cheese food in a large, microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high 3 to 4 minutes, or until processed cheese food is melted.
  • Into the bowl with melted processed cheese food, mix Worcestershire sauce and ketchup. When thoroughly blended, mix in beef and pork.
  • Place approximately 2 tablespoons of the mixture on each slice of cocktail rye bread.
  • Arrange cocktail rye bread slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven 10 to 15 minutes, or until lightly browned and crisp.
