WALDORF ASTORIA CAKE (RED CAKE) image

CAKE:
1/2 C softened butter
1 1/2 C sugar
2 eggs
2 oz bottle red food coloring
1 t vanilla
1 t vinegar
1 t salt
2 t cocoa
1 t soda
1 C buttermilk
2 1/2 C flour
FROSTING:
3 T flour
1 C milk
1 C butter
1 C sugar (regular, not powdered)
1 t vanilla

Steps:

  • CAKE: Cream shortening and sugar till fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs, one egg at a time, beating between each one. Mix food coloring and cocoa together, then add to sugar mixture. Add buttermilk and flour alternately. Lastly, add soda dissolved in vinegar (add before it stops fizzing) Bake 350 for 30 mins. or until toothpick comes out clean. FROSTING: Cook flour and milk unil thicker. Cool. Cream sugar, butter, and vanilla until very fluffy with mixer. FOLD sugar/butter mixture into cooled milk mixture.
