WALDORF ASTORIA CAKE image

This recipe if from one of my Grand mothers recipe book. She put lots of love in this cake when she made it.

Number Of Ingredients 19

1 teaspoon(s) soda
1 tablespoon(s) vinegar
1/2 cup(s) shortening
1 1/2 cup(s) sugar
2 - eggs
2 tablespoon(s) cocoa
1 ounce(s) red food color
2 cup(s) flour (sifted)
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1 cup(s) buttermilk
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
FROSTING PART 1
1 cup(s) milk
1/2 cup(s) flour
- pinch of salt
FROSTING PART 2
1 cup(s) sugar
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
1/2 cup(s) crisco

Steps:

  • Mix vinegar and soda, set aside. Cream sugar with shortening and add eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food color and add to creamed mixture.
  • Add buttermilk,salt, and flour alternately. Add vanilla then soda and vinegar.
  • Beat well and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes in two well oiled and floured pans. Cool and split each layer to make 4 thin layers
  • FROSTING PART 1: Cook over low flame until thickened, remove from heat and add 1 stick butter. Chill mixture.
  • FROSTING PART 2: Add to first part and beat at high speed until fluffy. Ice after putting layers together. Garnish with Coconut.
