Turtle Cake image

We love caramel, chocolate, and nuts together and this is one decadent dessert. It's oozing with caramel... simply heavenly. There are two layers of chocolate with caramel and nuts sandwiched in the middle. This recipe has nuts as optional. We didn't add them to the caramel but did use pecans as a garnish on this amazing cake....

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 box German chocolate or plain chocolate cake mix
1 bag(s) bag caramels, 8 oz
1 stick butter
1 can(s) sweetened condensed milk
1 bag(s) (small) bag walnuts or pecans (opt.)

Steps:

  • 1. Mix cake mix as directed on box.
  • 2. Pour half of the batter in the pan and bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
  • 3. Mix butter and caramels together in a small saucepan. Let caramels melt.
  • 4. Then add sweetened condensed milk and stir well. Stir often and do not let burn. Cook and stir this for about 1-2 minutes.
  • 5. Remove from heat and pour the caramel mixture over the cooked first layer of cake. Note: If you use nuts, just stir them in the caramel mixture after you have melted the caramels, butter, and condensed milk together. Then spread this onto your first baked cake layer.
  • 6. Then pour the remaining cake mix batter on top of the caramel mixture and spread gently and evenly.
  • 7. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until done.
  • 8. Let cool before serving.
  • 9. Optional: Drizzle extra caramel and nuts on top for serving.
