Before the days of commercial "sports drinks," people working outside apparently relied on a similar formulation. I've combined ingredients and prep techniques from several sources to come up with a recipe that suits me best.

1 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup molasses
1 cup sugar
2 ounces ginger, grated fresh
2 quarts water, plus more later

Steps:

  • Simmer apple cider vinegar, molasses, sugar, and ginger in 1 to 2 quarts of water for 15 minutes.
  • Add enough water to make a gallon of beverage.
  • Chill and serve. For optimal benefit, do not strain out the ginger. Optional: add 1/2 cup of oatmeal at beginning.
