SLOW COOKER APPLE BUTTER image

This is my recipe for a smooth, delicious and not too heavily spiced apple butter. If you like more spice flavor, you may double the ground cloves, allspice and/or nutmeg.

Number Of Ingredients 9

5 pound(s) apples, peeled, cored & cut into chunks (approx.)
2 cup(s) white granulated sugar
1 cup(s) brown sugar, lightly packed
2 teaspoon(s) ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon(s) ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon(s) ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon(s) ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon(s) apple cider vinegar (i use raw, unfiltered organic)
1/4 teaspoon(s) salt

Steps:

  • Process apple chunks, in batches, in food processor until finely chopped, emptying each batch into bowl of slow cooker.
  • Set slow cooker on "high," then add all remaining ingredients; stir until well combined.
  • Place lid on slow cooker; cook on high for 6 hours, stirring every hour or so. (May cook on low overnight, if desired.)
  • Apple butter should be brown and thick. For perfectly smooth apple butter, use immersion blender when it's finished cooking..
  • To can, immediately ladle into hot, sterilized jars; place sterilized lids on jars and screw on rings; process in boiling water bath 10 mins.
  • To freeze, ladle mixture into a large bowl, cover and refrigerate until mixture is cold (I let it chill overnight,) then spoon into small freezer containers or freezer bags.
