Shrimp Creole image

I love southern food and one of the best southern food is Cajun food. This is a really great traditional Creole recipe. Tip: you can use frozen shrimp if fresh shrimp is not available in your area. Just thaw before cooking.

5 Tbsp butter
1 large green bell pepper, finely chopped
1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
2 celery ribs, finely chopped
2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 large bay leaf
2 c chopped tomatoes
1 1/2 tsp worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
6 drops of tabasco sauce or more if desired
2 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
white rice, cooked

Steps:

  • 1. Melt the butter in a large, heavy skillet and add the bell pepper, onion, and celery. Saute for about 5 minutes, until limp.
  • 2. Add the flour, stirring until brown. (making a roux)
  • 3. Add all the other ingredients except the shrimp and rice. Stir until the mixture reaches a low boil and begins to thicken. Reduce the heat to simmer, cover, and cook for about 20 minutes to blend the flavor.
  • 4. Just before serving, add the shrimp to the sauce and stir just until they are pink but still firm, about 3 minutes.
  • 5. Remove the bay leaf and spoon the shrimp and vegetables over the white rice.
