Prune Cake image

My mother, who married at the age of 15, created this recipe while still a young girl. Our family has loved and served this cake for over 75 years. I think it's best served warm!

1 c sugar
3/4 c crisco
3 eggs
1/2 c sour cream
1 3/4 c flour
3 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp allspice, ground
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 c seeded prunes
2 eggs
1 c seeded prunes
1 c sugar
1/2 c sour cream
1/2 tsp salt

Steps:

  • 1. Cream together sugar and crisco. Blend in 3 eggs and 1/2 cup sour cream.
  • 2. Sift flour with the spices, baking soda and 1/2 tsp salt. Add to creamed ingredients.
  • 3. Beat in one cup seeded prunes.
  • 4. Pour into two greased, floured 9" cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Organize frosting ingredients. As soon as cake is done, remove from oven to cool on racks. Begin frosting:
  • 5. Combine eggs, sugar, sour cream, prunes and salt in large saucepan. Using electric beaters, beat ingredients over medium heat until thick and completely cooked. Immediately assemble and frost cake.
