Pocono Style Apple Dumplings image

Pennsylvania Dutch style Apple Dumplings. This recipe is my own creation after trying apple dumplings for the first time on a trip to the Poconos to pick pumpkins. They were a special on the menu at a small diner in Saylorsburg - I had never tasted anything quite so delicious. The dough is soft and almost uncooked at the bottom, the pastry soaked in syrup, and the apples spiced with cinnamon. The waitress served it warm with milk for breakfast, but sweetened whipped cream or ice cream would be good as an evening treat! (I have used 1 cup of whole wheat flour as a substitute, and they turned out fine)

Yield 6 Dumplings, 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 16

1/2 cup warm milk
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 egg, beaten
2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
2 apples, chopped
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup apple cider or 1 cup apple juice

Steps:

  • Add ingredients into bread maker and use 'Dough' function. Divide in half and roll out into circles. Slice circles into 3 pie shaped wedges.
  • Mix apples, sugar cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Melt butter, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon and apple cider or juice over a medium low flame. Stir well and cook for about 5 minutes until thick. Be careful not to burn mixture.
  • Fill each triangle with apple mix and pinch in the edges to create a triangular dumpling. Grease a medium baking dish and line the dumplings at the bottom. When they all fit, pour the syrup ontop.
  • Bake in an oven preheated to 350F for 20-30 minutes, basting every ten minutes or so. Depending on your oven they might be done sooner - check to see them golden on top then remove - they should be slightly undercooked at the bottom.
