Here is the recipe.
"Years ago I should have mimeographed copies of this old-fashioned biscuit-dough shortcake recipe-it would have saved me the time I've spent giving it to all the people who've eaten it at my table.
4 cups flour
2 T baking powder
1 t baking soda
1 cup sugar
1 t salt
1 c shortening (I have used butter or margerine too)
2 c sour milk or buttermilk -(you can sour milk with a dash of vinegar-sometimes I use powdered milk.

Steps:

  • Mix the dry ingredients and the shortening till the mixture is crumbly. Add the sour milk and mix just enough to make sure the dry part is moistened. Spread the dough out in a greased cake pan-quite a large flat one-or you can use half the recipe and put the batter into a 9x9 inch square one. Sprinkle white sugar over the top and bake in a 400 degree oven for about 20 minutes, or a bit longer-prick the centre to be sure. Serve warm and smothered with sugared berries or sliced peaches. You don't need to split it and butter it or slather it with whipped cream (I like to slather a bit though). This one stands on its own."
