Old Fashion Sugar Cookies image

These are my grand-kids favorite, soft sugar cookie that their great grand-mama made every year.

4 1/2 c all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 1/4 c shortening
2 c sugar
2 lg eggs, beaten
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp lemon extract
1 c buttermilk or sour milk*

Steps:

  • 1. *To make sour milk, combine 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar and enough milk to make 1 cup. Let stand 5 minutes.
  • 2. Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. In an large bowl beat shortening for 30 seconds, add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add eggs, vanilla, and lemon extract and beat well. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternating to shortening mixture, beating till well mixed. Divide in half. Cover and chill at least 3 hours or till easy to handle.
  • 3. For large cookies, roll dough 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds with a 3 inch cookie cutter. For small cookies, roll dough 3/8 inch thick and cut into rounds with a 2 inch cookie cutter. Place 2 1/2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with additional sugar.
  • 4. Bake in a 375* oven for 10 to 12 minutes or till done. Remove and cool. Makes 24 large or 48 small cookies.
