Mock Mincemeat (Green Tomato) image

Originally from from the 1967 American Woman's Cook Book by the Culinary Arts Intstitute of Chicago, this has traveled through various sites on line and ended up here!

Yield 1 quart, 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 14

6 green tomatoes
6 tart apples
1/4 lb seedless raisin (4 oz)
1/4 lb raisins (4 oz)
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/4 cup fruit juice
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup candied orange peel (you can use citron)
2 tablespoons orange rind
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon clove
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Steps:

  • Force tomatoes and cored apples through a food chopper or chop in food processor.
  • Place into dutch oven. Add remaining ingredients, bring to boil. Reduce heat and cook until thickened. .
  • If you are not using right away, you can can it: Fill sterilized jars with 1/2" headspace and process in hot water bath 20 minutes.
  • PS The original recipe calls for candied citron, but the ingredient list did not recognize the ingredient "citron" so I wrote orange peel. Your choice!
