Ma Ann's Chocolate Sheet Cake image

One of my very best friends, Ma Ann, gave me this recipe years ago and I've been making it ever since. Don't you dare make fun of my very well seasoned 9x13 pan. I've had it for 42 years and refuse to part with it since it was a wedding gift. LOL!

Number Of Ingredients 18

CAKE:
1 c oil
1 stick butter or margarine
1 c water
4 Tbsp baking cocoa
2 c self-rising flour
2 c granulated sugar
1/2 c buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
FROSTING:
1 stick butter or margarine
3 Tbsp milk
3 Tbsp baking cocoa
1 tsp vanilla extract
16 oz powdered sugar
3/4 c chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Bring to a boil the first 4 ingredients in a medium size saucepan, stirring constantly. Preheat oven to 350.
  • 2. Combine the flour and sugar & stir to combine. Mix the buttermilk and baking soda together and add in to the flour/sugar mixture. Add in the eggs and vanilla.
  • 3. Combine the two mixtures together and mix well with an electric mixer just until smooth.
  • 4. Pour into a 9 x 13 pan that has been sprayed with Pam. Bake for approximately 45 minutes @ 350 degrees & then cool completely.
  • 5. FROSTING: In a medium size saucepan, add the butter, milk and cocoa and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  • 6. Remove from heat and add in the vanilla and stir. Gradually add in the powdered sugar and blend until smooth. Add the nuts if desired, combine well and frost top of cooled cake.
  • 7. Here is a photo of MaAnn and I. She's the blonde. We have been friends since high school.
