Homemade Ketchup image

I got this recipe from License to Grill on Food Network Canada. I just love this and you can use it in any recipe you like that calls for ketchup. It just has a great flavor. One short note, the directions mention tomato paste and water, but did not appear in the ingredients. I added the amounts of both in the recipe I am posting. I made this for a family party and added freshly ground horseradish to use as a seafood sauce and it was a hit! Hope you like it!

Yield 4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 17

2 cups tomato sauce
2 cups canned chopped tomatoes
1 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar
1 2/3 cups brown sugar, packed
2 teaspoons granulated garlic (I just used one large clove of minced garlic)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons mustard powder
2 teaspoons celery salt
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 tsp.ground clove
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 tablespoon hot sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 tablespoons water

Steps:

  • 1. In a saucepot, combine tomato paste, vinegar, brown sugar, water, garlic and onion powder, celery salt, ground coriander, cayenne, cloves and nutmeg and hot sauce. Over medium high hear bring mixture to a boil and then reduce heat to simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally so the sauce does not stick to the bottom of the saucepot. Remove from heat and pour into a bottle or jar that can be sealed and stored in the refrigerator. This will last for up to a month in the fridge. Note: I did find that the flavor seems to mellow over time, but for the better.
