Homemade Chicken and Dumplin's image

I got this recipe from my mother. This recipe was passed down in my dad's family from his step-grandmother. It's always a hit in my house!

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup(s) water
1 tablespoon(s) shortening
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1 teaspoon(s) baking powder
2-3 cup(s) all purpose flour
1 medium chicken, whole
3/4 teaspoon(s) salt
1/4 teaspoon(s) black pepper
- water, enough to boil and for broth
NOTE: IF MORE BROTH IS NEEDED ADD CANNED BROTH OR WATER AND A CHICKEN BOUILLON CUBE

Steps:

  • Boil chicken with water, 3/4 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. black pepper until done. (about 1 hour) Then remove from broth and debone.
  • In a mixing bowl, add salt, baking powder, shortening, 1 cup water and enough flour (about 2 cups) to make a dough. Note: May add a little yellow food coloring to mixture before adding flour, if desired.
  • Roll out dough VERY THIN on floured surface and cut into strips; about 1" wide and 3" long. Parchment paper works great for rolling out dough.
  • Add the strips of dough (dumplins) to the boiling chicken broth. Boil about 20 min. Stirring occasionally. Add chicken; season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Note: may add 1 chicken bouillon cube or 1/4 tsp of poultry seasoning, if desired.
