Home-Style Butterbeans image

Mmmmmm! Never knew what a butterbean was until I moved south! Now Dad & I love them!!!!

Number Of Ingredients 8

8 slice(s) bacon, diced (see note)
1 medium onion, minced
1/2 cup(s) brown sugar, firmly packed
1 - 16 oz. package(s) butter beans, frozen
12 cup(s) water
1/4 cup(s) butter, cold
2 teaspoon(s) salt
1 teaspoon(s) black pepper

Steps:

  • Cook bacon & onion in a large dutch oven over medium heat 7 minutes. Add brown sugar & cook; stirring occasionally, 2 minutes or until sugar is dissolved. Stir in butter beans & butter until butter is melted & beans are thoroughly coated. Stir in 12 C. water.
  • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat; reduce heat to low & simmer, stirring occasionally, 2 hours or until beans are very tender & liquid is thickened & just below top of beans. Stir in salt & pepper.
