Grandma Sahlstrom's Ham Loaf image

During World War II meat was scarce and rationed. Butchers came up with a recipe for ham loaf for the holidays since most people could not afford a whole ham. Since then this recipe has been a family favorite and served at our family gatherings.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 1/2 lbs veal or 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 lb finely ground ham
1 cup cracker crumb
1 cup milk
salt & pepper
2 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • Mix first 6 ingredients, well with hands and mold in pan. Cover with foil and bake at 250 - 275 degrees for 2 ½ - 3 hours. Keep covered until the last 1hr.
  • While ham loaf is baking prepare sauce with remaining ingredients: place all ingredients in a small sauce pan bring to a boil for a minute. Simmer 10-15 minutes.
  • When one hour remains drain off liquid from ham loaf and pour over sauce ham loaf. Basting every 15 minutes until sauce forms a glaze. Turn up a heat a little.
