Gingerbread

I like to make these with my grandchildren for our cocker spaniel..That way I know what kind of things I am giving my pet..Some of the treats on the market are filled with preservatives...and things I can not even pronounce.

2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
3/4 cup old fashioned oats
2 eggs
1/2 cup molasses
1/3 cup canola oil
1/4 cup applesauce

Steps:

  • place dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Whisk till well combined. add eggs, molasses, applesauce and oil. Mix till well blended. place dough on lightly floured counter.sometimes I add a sprinkle of cornmeal -- Knead till smooth. roll 1/4" thick. cut with small gingerbread cutters.and place on sprayed sheet.bake at 325* for 30 minutes.
  • There is a debate on whether dogs should eat raisins.so I try to avoid them.when these first some out of the oven.I sometimes use peanuts for eye features or carob chips. and let granddaughter paint on them with yogurt coating that has been melted and a small amount of paramount crystals or veg oil has been added to thin.
  • My dog loves these.
