Dorothy's Sweet Potato Pie image

Smooth and sweet with the right blend of spices, this sweet potato pie is delicious! We can see why Dorothy sells so many at Thanksgiving. This pie is very easy to make but looks very impressive when served. It's a great alternative to pumpkin pie. Your friends and family will be happy to see this on your holiday dessert table.

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 medium sweet potatoes
1 c evaporated milk
4 large eggs
2 c sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp allspice
1 stick butter, room temperature
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 pkg 9 inch pie crust (I make my own)

Steps:

  • 1. Wash and peel sweet potatoes. In a large heavy pot add peeled and cubed sweet potatoes and salt. Cook on medium high until potatoes are fork tender. (Do not let them fall apart.) When done drain potatoes in a colander and pour into a large mixing bowl.
  • 2. Add butter to hot potatoes and mix until smooth. Add sugar and mix. Add your eggs and blend well. Pour in your milk and continue mixing. Once your mixture is blended well add vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice. Taste to make sure it is sweet enough for you. You can add more sugar, nutmeg or cinnamon at this time if you would like more. (Some of my customers like their pie very sweet and some not so sweet.)
  • 3. Pour into two 9" deep dish pie shells and bake for 1 hour in a 350 degree oven.
