Danish Apple Bars image

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter
1 egg yolk, slightly beaten
2/3 cup water to make 2/3 cup along with beaten egg yolk
1 cup corn flakes, crushed
4 apples, peeled and sliced
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg white, beaten till stiff peaks form
1 cup Glaze: icing sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Sift together in a bowl, 2 1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp salt.
  • Add 1 cup shortening - or mix shortening and butter
  • Mix as for pastry.
  • Combine 1 egg yolk - slightly beaten - and enough water to make 2/3 cup.
  • Slowly add egg-water mixture to the flour mix.
  • Mix until dry ingredients are moistened.
  • Divide dough in half.
  • Roll half into a rectangle 12x17.
  • place in greased cookie sheet, and bring pastry up sides.
  • Over the pastry, sprinkle 1 cup crushed cornflakes.
  • Arrange the apple slices on top of the cornflakes.
  • Combine 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon and sprinkle over apples.
  • Roll out other half of pastry and place over apples.
  • Brush the egg white which has been beaten till stiff, over the top crust.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes.
  • While warm glaze lightly with glaze made of 1 cup icing sugar, 1/2 tsp. vanilla and enough water to make a thin glaze.
