Steps:
- Sift together in a bowl, 2 1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp salt.
- Add 1 cup shortening - or mix shortening and butter
- Mix as for pastry.
- Combine 1 egg yolk - slightly beaten - and enough water to make 2/3 cup.
- Slowly add egg-water mixture to the flour mix.
- Mix until dry ingredients are moistened.
- Divide dough in half.
- Roll half into a rectangle 12x17.
- place in greased cookie sheet, and bring pastry up sides.
- Over the pastry, sprinkle 1 cup crushed cornflakes.
- Arrange the apple slices on top of the cornflakes.
- Combine 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon and sprinkle over apples.
- Roll out other half of pastry and place over apples.
- Brush the egg white which has been beaten till stiff, over the top crust.
- Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes.
- While warm glaze lightly with glaze made of 1 cup icing sugar, 1/2 tsp. vanilla and enough water to make a thin glaze.
