Country Beef Patties image

When my family wants a down-home dinner, this is the recipe they usually request. Bacon in patties gives a subtle smoky flavor, while tomato gravy adds a little zip.-Bernice Morris, Marshfield, Missouri

Number Of Ingredients 16

1 pound ground beef
2 bacon strips, diced
1 teaspoon finely chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
TOMATO GRAVY:
2 tablespoons chopped green pepper
1 tablespoon chopped onion
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 to 2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the beef, bacon, onion, salt and pepper. Shape into four oval patties; brown in a skillet over medium heat. Remove patties and keep warm. , Drain, reserving 1 tablespoon drippings. In the same skillet, saute green pepper and onion in drippings until tender. Add the tomatoes, bay leaves, sugar, celery salt, salt and pepper. , Combine flour and water until smooth; add to tomato mixture, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. , Return patties to gravy. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Uncover; simmer 10 minutes longer. Discard bay leaves.
