CHEESY ONION BREAD image

Yield 1 loaf

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/2 sticks butter, 1 stick cubed
1 large onion, chopped
1 tbsp. poppy seeds
s & p
1 cup shredded Gruyere
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 Butter a 9x41/2 loaf pan In a medium skillet, melt the 1/2 stick of butter-reserve 2 tbsp. of it Saute the onion til soft, add the poppy seeds and s & pepper. Cool Mix the flour, powder and soda and salt in a blender, add the cubed butter and pulse til the butter is the size of peas. Add the buttermilk and mix Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead a couple of times. Flatten into a 2x24 rectangle Spread the onion mix over and sprinkle with the cheese. Cut into 10 equal pieces and stack one on top of another, onion side up. Put the last piece onion side down. Lay in loaf pan Bake 30 min, let cool about 15 minutes b/4 unmolding
