Candy Cane Cookies image

Each year I make lots of cookies and put them in gift boxes for our sons and family. I made this cookie for the first time in 2008, they were a huge hit with everyone especially the little ones and they really stand out on a cookie patter at parties. It is the first cookie that goes first! I got this recipe off of a Philly Cream Cheese box.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup(s) butter, softened
1 cup(s) confectioners sugar
1 - egg
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) almond extract
2 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon(s) salt
- red food coloring
DECORATING THE CANDY CANE:
- this can be done two different ways. first you can go and try to find holly leaves and berries and place them on the cookie after they have cooled slightly so the candy doesn't melt.
- if you can't find the holly candy then you can use red gel icing in a small tube and then add little christmas trees or leaves that resemble holly.

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and almond extract next. Combine the flour and salt in a separate bowl and gradually add it to the creamed mixture and mix well.
  • Divide the dough in half and add about 6 to 7 drops of food coloring to one half. (More if you want it darker).
  • Take one tablesppon of each color and roll it into 4 inch ropes. Place the ropes side by side; lightly press ends together and twist to form a candy cane.
  • Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350° for 9 to 10 minutes or until lightly borwn. Cool for 2 minutes before removing to wire racks. Cool completely.
