Candied Yams image

This is a traditional side on the Thanksgiving table for my family; no recipe collection is complete without it.

6 medium yams
3 Tbsp butter
1 c syrup or molasses
marshmallows (optional)
2 c chopped nuts, toasted (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Boil yams, DO NOT BREAK THE SKIN! Then peel and cut into quarters or cubes.
  • 2. Place yams in shallow, buttered pan (13x9"). Pour syrup/molasses over yams, add nuts if desired and dot with butter.
  • 3. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.
  • 4. If using marshmallows: pull out of oven after about 20 minutes and add marshmallows, then replace in oven for 5 to 10 minutes more, or until marshmallows are golden around their edges.
