Number Of Ingredients 9

1 - cabbage head
1 teaspoon(s) salt
2 cup(s) cheddar cheese, shredded
1 1/2 cup(s) bread crumbs, buttered
BASIC WHITE SAUCE:
2 tablespoon(s) butter
2 tablespoon(s) flour
2 cup(s) heavy cream
1 teaspoon(s) salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Shred cabbage. Cook 5 - 8 minutes in boiling water with salt. Don't over cook; cabbage should remain crisp. Drain well & transfer to a large bowl.
  • Grease a 2 qt. casserole dish.
  • MAKE BASIC WHITE SAUCE: To make a roux, melt butter in a small sized sauce pot & add flour, salt & pepper & bring to a boil. Set aside. Put milk in a medium sized sauce pot & bring to boil. As the milk begins to boil, whip roux into milk. Continue to whip until sauce comes back to a boil.
  • In the bowl where cabbage is...pour roux in & mix well. Stir in cheese. Pour into greased casserole dish & top with buttered bread crumbs.
  • Cook at 300 degrees F for 20 minutes. Enjoy!
