Bonnach (Celtic Bread) from Canada image

From The Nova Scotia Inns and Restaurants Cookbook, Breads and Muffins section, this recipe is from the Inverary Inn. Nice at breakfast time!

Number Of Ingredients 7

4 cups flour
8 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup currants
1 1/2 cups milk

Steps:

  • Combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Work in shortening as for pastry.
  • Add currants.
  • Moisten with milk, making a soft dough. Knead 10 seconds.
  • Pat out on a greased cookie sheet, to a thickness of a 1/2 inch.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Serve warm with butter.
