Steps:
- Crush finely about half of the oreo cookie package and add 1/2 stick melted butter to the crumbs. Pat into the 11x 15 pan to form a crust about 1/4 inch thick. Use your own judgement here. Crush more cookies if you don't think it is thick enough Soak 1 T of gelatin in 1/4 cup of cold water. Scald 2 cups of half and half. Combine 1/2 cup of sugar with 4 tsp of corn starch and stir well. Add sugar mixture to milk. Beat 4 egg yolks well and add to milk.Cook over hot water (about 20 minutes) until custard coats the spoon heavily. Take 1 cup of custard and add 1 1/2 ounces of melted chocolate. Blend well and add 1/2 tsp of vanilla. Pour and spread over oreo crust. Dissolve the soaked gelatin in the remaining custard. Be sure it is still hot or the gelatin will not melt properly. Let this cool but not stiffen. Stir in 1 tablespoon of rum or 2 teaspoons of vanilla and set aside. Beat til stiff 3 egg whites, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar. Gradually add 1/4 cup sugar . Fold whites into custard and cover chocolate filling. Chill til set. Whip 1 cup cream with 2 T powdered sugar and cover the custard. Shave chocolate on top.
