Apple Slices image

Favorite recipe from Judy. These are the BEST. The secret to a crisp bottom crust is the crushed cornflakes!! Don't forget the coffee!

Number Of Ingredients 17

CRUST
3 cup(s) flour
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1 cup(s) shortening
7 tablespoon(s) milk
1 - egg yolk, beaten
1 cup(s) crushed cornflakes
FILLING
8 large apples, cut up
1 cup(s) sugar
1 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
CRUST TOPPER
1 - egg white, beaten stiff
GLAZE
1 cup(s) powdered sugar
3 tablespoon(s) water
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Sift together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until crumbly.
  • Combine milk and egg yolk. Stir into flour mixture until evenly moistened. (Using your hands works best).
  • Divide dough almost in half. Roll out large half, place in 10 x 15 baking pan.
  • Press dough up on sides of pan, sprinkle with crushed cornflakes.
  • Arrange sliced apples over the top of the crushed cornflakes.
  • combine sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle over apples.
  • Roll out other half of dough to fit on top of apples.
  • Moisten edges of dough with water, seal. *Make a batch and a half of the dough to make sure you have enough to seal.
  • Spread egg white over crust. Bake at 375 degrees for one hour or until golden brown. ( Usually about 50 minutes).
  • Combine powdered sugar, water and vanilla for glaze. Drizzle over bars while warm. Cut and enjoy!
