100 Year Old Pork Cake image

This is a sweet meat cake from Gramma Stevens' ziplock recipe bag. It's so unique, it makes you wonder what people were thinking 150 years ago. And... could it possibly contain raisins? Why, yes it does. As with all gramma's recipes, I keep them original and the directions are as is. Good Luck and Enjoy ~

1 lb salt pork (all fat)
1 pt boiling water
4 c sugar
1/2 c molasses
1 egg, well beaten
6 c flour, sifted
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp nutmeg
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves
1 lb raisins

Steps:

  • 1. Put pork thru grinder, pour boiling water over it and let stand until lukewarm.
  • 2. Stir in sugar, spices, soda, well beaten egg and molasses.
  • 3. Sift flour and add to fruit and then to pork mix. Stir until well blended.
  • 4. Pour into well greased baking pan and bake 2 hours in a 300 degree oven or until done.
  • 5. Gramma Note: This cake can be eaten as soon as baked and cooled, or it will keep for weeks. Good for outdoors picnics.
