Yield Makes six to seven dozen

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup butter, or substitute
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons of milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon of vanilla
2 cups of flour
2 teaspoons of baking powder

Steps:

  • Cream butter and sugar together, add well beaten eggs, then milk, flavoring, flour and baking powder. Roll thin and bake in quick oven. Sprinkle sugar on top.

This recipe was used by the Girl Scouts of Philadelphia in the early 1930's who baked their own cookies to be sold at the first cookie sale. Girl Scouts in Uniform were seen in the window of the Philadelphia Gas Company preparing these cookies for baking.

1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
4 cups flour
2 eggs
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon milk
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Cream butter and sugar.
  • Add eggs, milk, vanilla and flour which have been sifted together with the baking powder and salt.
  • Mix well.
  • Roll out fairly thin and cut with cookie cutters.
  • Bake at 350º for 6-8 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with sugar which is optional.

Yield 4 dozen (2-1/2-inch cookies).

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, room temperature
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Decorator's sugar, optional

Steps:

  • In a bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in milk and vanilla. Whisk together flour and baking powder; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Chill at least 2 hours or overnight. , Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut with trefoil cookie cutter or cutter of your choice. Place cookies on ungreased baking sheets. Sprinkle with decorator's sugar if desired. , Bake until lightly browned, 8-10 minutes. Cool on wire racks.
