Have you ever had a Hot Buttered Rum? This classic winter cocktail is so overlooked but so easy to make - and delicious!

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ginger
3 cups boiling water
6 oz rum
2 oz orange juice
Orange zest

Steps:

  • In a medium-sized bowl, combine the brown sugar, butter and spices until light and fluffy.
  • Portion 2 tablespoons of the spice butter into each cocktail glass.
  • Measure 1 1/2 oz of rum into each glass and top with 3/4 cup boiling water.
  • Stir well to break down the butter.
  • Add a splash of orange juice and a sprinkling of orange zest.
  • Serve hot.

2 cups orange juice
1 cup cranberry juice cocktail
1 cup spiced rum, optional
1 cup whiskey
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 orange, sliced
1 cinnamon stick

Steps:

  • Combine the apple cider, orange juice, cranberry juice, spiced rum, if using, whiskey, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, sugar, orange slices and cinnamon stick into a large pot. Heat on medium-low for 10 minutes. Serve in heat-proof mugs or glasses.

2 orange spice tea bags
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup apple cider
6 ounces rum
2 cinnamon sticks
2 teaspoons butter
2 orange slices

Steps:

  • Steep tea bags in hot water for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Remove tea bags, add brown sugar, apple cider,cinnamon sticks and butter and heat over medium/low heat for about 15 minutes.
  • Add rum and ladle into mugs.
  • Garnish with cinnamon stick and orange.

I have been making this Rum Toddy for many years. This is good on cold days, a cold or a sore throat. I am not suggesting it is a cure, but it is tasty.

3 ounces dark rum (or to suit taste)
4 tablespoons liquid honey
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 piece lemon rind
1/16 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 -4 inch cinnamon stick (whole)
6 -8 ounces boiling water

Steps:

  • To a large heavy duty cup or glass, add rum, honey, lemon juice, 1/2 lemon rind, and nutmeg. Stand cinnamon stick in the cup.
  • Pour the boiling water and stir well to blend.
  • Adjust honey to suit your sweetness and adjust lemon juice to suit your taste.
  • Sip slowly and enjoy.
