⅔ cup shortening
¾ cup white sugar
1 egg
½ cup orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
  • Mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir 1/2 cup orange juice and 1 teaspoon rind into the flour mixture.
  • Cream shortening and white sugar together. Mix egg into the sugar mixture thoroughly. Slowly blend flour mixture into the egg and sugar mixture. Drop by teaspoonful onto greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Make the icing: Mix confectioner's sugar and 2 tablespoons butter together until smooth. Pour 2 tablespoons orange juice and 1 teaspoon orange rind into the sugar and butter mixture, mix well. When the cookies have cooled spread the icing generously over the tops of the cookies.

From the 1963 Betty Crocker Cooky Book. These are a cake-like cookie. For variety, add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts, raisins or chocolate chips. I used chocolate chips because I enjoy the taste of chocolate and orange together.

2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg, room temperature
1/2 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons orange zest, grated
1/2 cup raisins or 1/2 cup chocolate chips, if using

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 400F/200°C.
  • Mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
  • In another large mixing bowl, mix butter, sugar and egg thoroughly. Stir in orange juice and rind.
  • Sift dry ingredients into wet ingredients and blend together.
  • Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough about 2" apart on ungreased baking sheet.
  • Bake 8-10 minutes or until delicately browned on edges.
  • Remove from cookie sheets and cool completely. Store in an airtight container.

This recipe is from my great grandmother. I entered these in our County Fair. There were over 60 entries in the drop cookie category. I received 2nd place. Pretty darn good, huh? My great grandmother would have been so proud. You can make sour milk by combining 1/2 cup of milk with 1 teaspoon vinegar and allow to set 10 minutes.

1 ½ cups packed brown sugar
1 cup butter flavored shortening
2 eggs
1 tablespoon orange zest
½ cup sour milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 teaspoons baking powder
3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon butter
3 tablespoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Lightly grease cookie sheets.
  • In a medium size mixing bowl, mix together 3 teaspoons baking powder and 3 1/4 cups flour.
  • Beat together brown sugar and shortening then add eggs, orange rind and vanilla. Mix in flour mixture, alternating the flour mixture and sour milk until all is blended. Drop dough by teaspoonful onto cookie sheets.
  • Bake 12-15 minutes. Let cool and frost cookies.
  • To Make Frosting: Mix together powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon butter and enough orange juice mixed in to make it able to spread over cooled cookies.

3/4 c sugar

2 c flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder

ORANGE BUTTER FROSTING
2 1/2 Tbsp butter
1 1/2 c powdered sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp orange juice
2 tsp grated orange rind

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 400°. Mix butter, sugar and egg thoroughly. Stir in orange juice and rind. Stir in dry ingredients and mix well.
  • 2. Drop rounded teaspoons of dough 2" apart on a baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes or until delicately browned on edges.
  • 3. Mix frosting ingredients together. When cookies are cooled, frost.

1 cup sour cream
2 eggs
3 tablespoons grated orange zest
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda

⅔ cup orange juice
¼ cup margarine, melted
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
3 tablespoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the margarine, sugar and sour cream until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in 3 tablespoons orange zest. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir into the sugar mixture alternately with 2/3 cup orange juice. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. In a small bowl, stir together the melted margarine, confectioners' sugar and 1 tablespoon orange zest. Mix remaining orange juice in 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Spread over cooled cookies.

2 cups (packed) dried sweetened cranberries (about 10 ounces)
1/3 cup orange juice
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
1 large egg
1 tablespoon minced peeled fresh ginger
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons grated orange peel
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
3/4 cup chopped unsalted natural pistachios
1/2 cup coarsely chopped fresh or frozen cranberries

Steps:

  • Butter 3 baking sheets. Combine dried sweetened cranberries and orange juice in small bowl. Let stand until dried cranberries soften slightly, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes.
  • Whisk all purpose flour, ground cinnamon, baking powder, ground ginger, baking soda, and salt in medium bowl until just blended.
  • Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 350°F. Using electric mixer, beat room-temperature butter and golden brown sugar in large bowl until smooth. Add 1 egg, minced ginger, vanilla extract, and grated orange peel and beat until well blended, about 2 minutes. Beat in flour-spice mixture. Stir in chopped walnuts, chopped pistachios, coarsely chopped fresh or frozen cranberries, and dried cranberries with any juices that have accumulated.
  • Drop cookie dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto prepared baking sheets, spacing tablespoonfuls about 1 1/2 inches apart. Bake cookies, 1 baking sheet at a time, until golden and almost firm to touch in center, about 18 minutes. Cool cookies on baking sheets 5 minutes. Transfer to racks; cool cookies completely. 1 package white cake mix (regular size)
2 large eggs
1/2 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon grated orange zest
1 teaspoon orange extract
1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
ICING:
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, oil, orange zest and extract. Fold in coconut. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 in. apart onto ungreased baking sheets. , Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown. Remove to wire racks to cool. In a small bowl, combine icing ingredients until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled cookies.

1 c shortening
2 eggs
2 c sugar
4 1/2 c flour
2 tsp salt
1 tsp each - baking soda & baking powder
1 c soured milk
juice of one orange
grated rind of two oranges
FROSTING
3 3/4 c confectioners' sugar
1 Tbsp softened, butter
1 orange, juiced and rind grated - add more juice if needed to get desired spreading consistency

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 400 degree F. In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening, eggs and sugar.
  • 2. Combine flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder.
  • 3. Mix in the dry ingredients, with the wet mixture, alternating with the sour milk. Ending with flour. Stir in the rind and juice.
  • 4. Drop by teaspoonful on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for 8 - 10 minutes or until beginning to color on edges.
  • 5. Remove from sheet pan to cooling racks.
  • 6. Cool completely and then frost. Frosting: In a medium bowl, combine frosting ingredients, mix well, and add more juice if need be...you want it to be thicker though, not a glaze.
  • 7. Enjoy!
