Pecans are very plentiful in the South, and this is one of my favorite ways to use them. No other date nut bread I've tried is anywhere near as moist and flavorful as this one. I especially like to bake it for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Number Of Ingredients 13

BREAD:
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 small unpeeled orange, cut into pieces and seeded
1 cup pitted chopped dates
1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped pecans
SAUCE:
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup sugar

Steps:

  • For bread, place eggs, butter, sugar, orange pieces and dates in blender or food processor. Cover and process with on/off motions until finely chopped. Remove to a large bowl. , In separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt; add to orange mixture and mix until well-combined. Stir in pecans. Pour batter into greased 9x5-in. loaf pan. , Bake at 325° for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. If bread begins to darken, cover with foil during last few minutes of baking., Meanwhile, for sauce, heat orange juice and sugar until sugar has dissolved. When bread comes out of the oven, poke holes with a toothpick and slowly pour the sauce over top. Let stand for 15 minutes before removing from pan. Cool on a wire rack.

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
3 large eggs, beaten
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1-1/3 cups buttermilk
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped dates
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
GLAZE
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons grated orange zest

Steps:

  • In a bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs; mix well. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Fold in walnuts, dates and orange zest. Pour into two greased and floured 8x4-in. loaf pans. Bake at 350° for 60-65 minutes or until done. Combine glaze ingredients; spoon half over hot bread. Cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pans; spoon remaining glaze over bread.

2 cups sugar
3 eggs, beaten
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/3 cups buttermilk
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped dates
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons grated orange rind

Steps:

  • In large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar.
  • Add eggs; mix well.
  • Combine flour, soda, and salt.
  • Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.
  • Fold in walnuts, dates, and orange peel.
  • Pour into 2 greased and floured 8 inch loaf pans.
  • Bake at 350* for 60 minutes or until done.

This is a very old recipe from a church cook book. I changed a few things to make it my own.Just being a orange bread is unique. It is full of orange flavor. Yummy!!! Enjoy!!

2 Tbsp butter or shortening
1 c granulated sugar
1 egg
2 c flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp cinamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
3/4 or 1 c chopped dates
3/4 c chopped walnuts
2 1/2 Tbsp grated orange rind
3/4 c orange juice

Steps:

  • 1. beat the butter,sugar,and egg together.
  • 2. in another bowl mix the flour,baking soda,baking powder,cinnamon.,cloves,and nutmeg. add to the sugar mixture,and stir really well.
  • 3. Stir in the dates,nuts,and orange rind to the mixture.. Add in the orange juice last and stir until combined really well.
  • 4. put mixture in to a greased and floured bread pan,and bake at 350 for 50-60 minutes,or until pick comes out clean.

This date bread is enhanced by the addition of fresh orange juice and rind. The recipe was given to me by a co-worker 30 years ago who has since passed on; I cherish the original recipe in her own handwriting. It's time to share it.

1/4 cup orange juice, fresh squeezed
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup boiling water
1 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup nuts

Steps:

  • Place chopped dates and orange rind in small bowl.
  • Cover with boiling water and orange juice.
  • Let rest while preparing the following:.
  • Sift flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda in bowl and whisk to mix evenly.
  • In the mixer bowl cream butter and sugar til creamy.
  • Add egg and mix well.
  • Add flour mixture and date mixture and blend for 2 minutes.
  • Fold in nuts.
  • Grease and flour a bread pan.
  • Bake at 350 for 50-60 minutes. Let stand about 10 minutes before turning out.
