Very simple, very old recipe from my 99 year old German MIL. Delicate. i'm trying to think of how I could flavor this a bit--perhaps just a hint of mace? Or maybe I shouldn't mess with something simple and delectable.

Number Of Ingredients 5

3/4 cup butter, room temperature
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1 cup flour
sugar, in which to roll cookie

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients with hands.
  • Break off enough to make a 1/2 " thick roll about 1 1/2 " long.
  • Roll it in sugar.
  • Form into rounded "S" shape.
  • Bake 400F for 8-10 minutes.

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon extract
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup sour cream
1 1/2 teaspoons rose water
3 cups flour
1/8 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Cream sugar and butter until smooth.
  • Beat in yolks and flavorings.
  • Combine baking soda and sour cream and stir into sugar mixture.
  • Add rose water.
  • Sift flour and salt and mix with batter.
  • Roll out on floured surface and cut with cookie cutter.
  • Bake on greased sheets for 15 to 20 minutes.

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon lavender, crushed
1 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups powdered sugar
5 1/2 teaspoons water
6 1/2 teaspoons rose water

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs, lavender, flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Drop by teaspoons onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for about 10 minutes.
  • While the cookies bake, prepare the icing by mixing the powdered sugar with water and rose water. Drizzle over the cookies after they have cooled.

1/4 teaspoon cardamom, ground
1 1/2 cups rice flour (a little more for rolling)
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter, room temp
1 large egg
1 teaspoon rose water
1 teaspoon poppy seed

Steps:

  • Whisk together cardamom and flour. Set aside.
  • Beat sugar and butter with electric mixer until smooth.
  • Add egg and rosewater, beat to blend.
  • On low speed, add dry ingredients. Your dough will be stiff.
  • Cover and chill at least 6 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 300°F.
  • Roll level tablespoon size balls and place on silpat lined baking sheet about 1.5" apart. Using a fork or something else, flatten to .25" thickness.
  • Sprinkle with poppy seeds.
  • Bake until firm but still pale, about 20 - 25 minutes.
  • Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  • Time doe not include chill time.

2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup sugar
2/3 cup shortening
2 eggs
4 teaspoons rose water

Steps:

  • Sift the dry ingredients together into a mixing bowl.
  • Add the shortening, eggs, and rose water and mix well.
  • Roll the dough out very thinly on a flat surface and cut with a floured cookie cutter.
  • Place the cookies on a greased cookie sheet and bake in a 400F oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup caster sugar
1 large egg
1 tablespoon light cream
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon rose water
sugar, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together until a firm dough forms.
  • Form a roll with the mixture and wrap in cling film.
  • Chill for at least an hour, then slice thinly.
  • Heat oven to 170 degrees Celsius.
  • Line a cookie sheet with nonstick parchment paper. Arrange cookies so that there is enough space for them to spread.
  • Sprinkle lightly with sugar and bake for about 10 minutes, or until they are just turning brown on the edges.
