I will always remember how delicious these were and how everyone used to rave over them when Grandma would make them. I honestly dont remember how many these make but they are SO good, I just found the recipe and I am so excited!

Steps:
- Mix oats, flour, and baking soda.
- Add shortening.
- Prepare filling by mixing chopped dates, hot water, brown sugar, and vanilla.
- Put 1/2 dry mix in a baking pan.
- Add filling.
- Top with rest of dry mix.
- Bake 20 minutes at 350, or until well browned.

A date filled bar with a chewy oatmeal crust. This is my grandmother's recipe, which my whole family loves.

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- In a large bowl, combine oats, pastry flour, salt, 1 cup brown sugar, and baking soda. Mix in the butter until crumbly. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of a 9 inch square baking pan.
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the dates, water, and 1/3 cup brown sugar. Bring to a boil, and cook until thickened. Stir in lemon juice, and remove from heat. Spread the filling over the base, and pat the remaining crumb mixture on top.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in preheated oven, or until top is lightly toasted. Cool before cutting into squares.

OLD FASHIONED CRISPETTE SQUARES (DATED 1950)
This was a handwritten recipe in my Mom's collection. I remember them as good but have not tried out the recipe for years.

- 1. Cream 1/4 cup Crisco and 1/2 cup brown sugar Sift together 1 cup flour, 1/8 tsp. salt, 1/4 tps nutmeg. With fork or pastry blender cut Crisco mixture into flour mixture until well blended. Press into a 9 inch square (parchment paper lined) pan. Bake 15 minutes in 350 degree oven.
- 2. Add 1 cup brown sugar to 2 well beaten eggs. Stir to mix. Add 1/4 tsp salt, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 cup coconut,mix well. Stir in 1 1/2 cup rice crispies, 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Spread over baked layer and continue baking 24 minutes more. Cut into squares while warm.
