Not to be confused with the Hungarian dish of paprika-spiced stewed meat and vegetables, this American version of goulash, also referred to as "slumgullion," is made with ground beef and pasta. The beef is cooked down with plenty of aromatics and spices and combined with tomatoes, pasta, and cheese to create the perfect comfort meal. We added paprika to the dish in a nod to its Hungarian counterpart.

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound ground beef
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon tomato paste
One 15-ounce can diced tomatoes
One 15-ounce can tomato sauce
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup low-sodium beef broth
8 ounces cavatappi pasta
4 ounces sharp Cheddar, shredded on the large holes of a box grater (about 1 cup), plus more for serving
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, plus more for serving

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  • Add the beef and cook, stirring and breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until browned and no longer pink, about 8 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon salt, a few grinds of pepper, the paprika, and Italian seasoning to the beef and stir to combine. Cook, stirring, until the paprika begins to toast and become fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir the tomato paste into the beef mixture to coat, then cook until the paste thickens and deepens in color, about 2 minutes.
  • Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire and beef broth to the beef mixture and stir, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot, to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to medium low and add the cavatappi. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is al dente, 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Gently stir in the parsley and Cheddar until combined and the cheese starts to melt. Divide the goulash among 6 bowls and top with more shredded Cheddar and chopped parsley.

1 pound lean ground beef
1 (26 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
1 (15.25 ounce) can whole kernel corn
1 onion, chopped
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add egg noodles and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the beef; drain.
  • Heat through over medium the beef, spaghetti sauce, corn, chopped onion and cheese.

2 pounds lean ground beef
2 large yellow onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 cups water
2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons dried Italian herb seasoning
3 bay leaves
1 tablespoon seasoned salt, or to taste
2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni

Steps:

  • Cook and stir the ground beef in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, breaking the meat up as it cooks, until the meat is no longer pink and has started to brown, about 10 minutes. Skim off excess fat, and stir in the onions and garlic. Cook and stir the meat mixture until the onions are translucent, about 10 more minutes.
  • Stir water, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, soy sauce, Italian seasoning, bay leaves, and seasoned salt into the meat mixture and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir macaroni into the mixture, cover, and simmer over low heat until the pasta is tender, about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, discard bay leaves, and serve.

This is a concoction I came up with while trying to find a different way to use hot dogs that was kid friendly.

16 ounces hot dogs (I buy them when they are on sale)
1/4 cup onion
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 quart diced tomato (I can my own but 2 16oz cans will do)
1 (26 ounce) jar pasta sauce (I buy in quality when on sale 10 for $10.00)
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can cream of tomato soup (on sale at $1.00 per can)
1 cup water
16 ounces pasta (I use medium shell macaroni on sale at 2 for $1.00)
1 dash pepper (I use fresh ground and don't add salt as the hot dogs are salty enough)

Steps:

  • cut hot dogs in 1/2 lengthwise then into 1/4" pieces.
  • In 4qt pan brown hot dogs and onions in oil.
  • add tomatoes, soup or tomato paste ,water, and pasta sauce. add pepper and garlic powder.
  • Let simmer while macaroni is cooking.
  • Cook macar4oni in separate pan, drain and add to sauce.
  • Works well with ground beef ,fresh browned of course, leftover hamburger patties chopped fine, leftover meat loaf or meatballs broken up fine and even leftover cooked chicken or turkey.

This is my grandmother's recipe she invented back when times were tight. You can add more mushrooms and yellow squash to it. Serve over rice or egg noodles.

1 pound lean ground beef
1 (8 ounce) package fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 green bell pepper, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
1 red bell pepper, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
1 zucchini, thickly sliced
1 small red onion, sliced
4 tablespoons olive oil
½ tablespoon paprika
½ tablespoon dried basil
1 teaspoon garlic salt
½ teaspoon white pepper
1 (14.5 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes with liquid, chopped

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef. Remove beef with a slotted spoon and discard fat.
  • Return skillet to stove, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Stir in mushrooms, green and red peppers, squash, onion, paprika, basil, garlic salt, and pepper; cook for five minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Reduce heat to medium. Stir in beef and tomatoes; simmer about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
